NRA exemption shows campaign disclosure bill's cynical, fatal flaws (from board member)

The cynical decision this week by House Democrats to exempt the National Rifle Association from the latest campaign finance regulatory scheme is itself a public disclosure.

It reveals the true purpose of the perversely named Disclose Act (H.R. 5175): namely, to silence congressional critics in the 2010 elections.

The NRA "carve-out" reaffirms the wisdom of the First Amendment's precise language: "Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech."

*snip*

The Disclose Act is a doozy of a muzzle.

For its part, the NRA -- on whose board of directors I serve -- rather than holding steadfastly to its historic principles of defending the Constitution and continuing its noble fight against government regulation of political speech instead opted for a political deal borne of self-interest in exchange for "neutrality" from the legislation's requirements

“Can’t believe they caved.”

I can. I have to wonder if the NRA cares as little about the 2nd amendment as they apparently care about the 1st.

Ever since Grover Norquist (Mr. Muslim convert/author of Bush’s amnesty) was on the board of NRA it has gone downhill.
Everyone, please don’t trust ANY of these so called ‘conservative’ lobbying groups...most of them have been hi jacked by the left.

Thinking big picture here, but...

Maybe their caving will make the whole thing unenforceable if not un-passable.

I can. I’m disappointed in it, but I believe it.

Someone in my state who we had been trying to get out of office, lost his re election. But we got mail, emails, and phone calls from the NRA asking to support this corrupt politician.

I was shocked then.

I’m not now on this one.

“THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.

THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.

THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Neimoller”

I thought of this immediately when I heard of this shady deal. Their letter defending their actions just reinforced the current NRA leadership’s cowardance for me.

The NRA protected ITSELF. It has neither the time, nor the funds, to protect EVERYBODY else who might have an opinion on something. The FIRST duty of the NRA is to protect itself, and STAY ALIVE AND FUNCTIONAL, so it can fight the insipid guns bans that come up every session of Congress.
