It's well-known that there's a severe gender imbalance in undergraduate college populations: About 57 percent of undergrads these days are female and just 43 percent male, the culmination of a trend in which significantly fewer young men than young women either graduate from high school or enroll in college.
It's also well-known - at least among college admissions officers - that many private institutions have tried to close the gender gap by quietly relaxing admissions standards for males, essentially practicing affirmative action for young men. What they're doing is perfectly legal, even under Title IX, the 1972 federal law that bans sex discrimination by institutions of higher learning receiving federal funds. Title IX contains an exemption that specifically allows private colleges that aren't professional or technical institutions to prefer one sex over the other in undergraduate admissions. Militant feminists and principled opponents of affirmative action might complain about the discrimination against women that Title IX permits, but for many second- and third-tier liberal arts colleges lacking male educational magnets such as engineering and business programs, the exemption may be a lifesaver, preventing those smaller and less prestigious schools from turning into de facto women's colleges that few young people of either sex might want to attend.
Now, however, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has decided to turn over this rock carefully set in place by admissions committees. The commission launched an investigation in the fall into the extent of male preferences in admissions decisions at 19 institutions of higher learning. These include public universities (where such preferences are illegal under Title IX); elite private institutions such as Georgetown and Johns Hopkins; smaller liberal arts schools (Gettysburg College, with 2,600 undergraduates, is on the list); religious schools (the University of Richmond and Messiah College in Grantham, Pa.)

“2 girls for every boyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy”
a curious question will be: in 50 years, when white males will be the minority in the U.S, will they receive special assistance and GOV placement?
The shortage of men undoubtedly has a great deal to do with the fact that the women have become wh@res.
And just what’s wrong with having too many women on campus?
Yes.
A long time ago, there was a cop show mini-series that included that theme. The show was The Bakery, (I think). They had an episode set in the future where white males were now the minority and given affirmative action treatment. The non-white males resented it.
Agreed that colleges should give more attention to engineering and other hard studies. Most of the degrees offered by these particular colleges are complete crap (no engineering or business programs?!!). How many more feminist studies, sociologists, etc., do we really need?
Two points:
1: Higher education today exists to suck up federal student loans and benefits.
2: The imbalance is is why more college gals today are lesbians, at least until graduation. They just can’t get dates with suitable guys! (After graduation, they can have affairs with the married men at work.) Sad but true.
Actually 18-21 year old lib chicks are pretty hot. Plus, because they've been raised wrong they're easier to bed and they're freakier. You just want to stay away from them once they turn 22 or 23....their boobs start to sag and they start developing anger-marks on their face. Then, you go and marry a good Conservative girl and the lib chicks become lesbians.
huh?
isnt that a little harsh?
I have talked to a couple of my black friends about this. Pretty much their attitude is that the white men had it so good for so long let them see what it's like to be discriminated against... So sorry, there will apparently be no sympathy or relief for them in this case.
However, I will include this quote from Malcolm X:
"Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you're a man, you take it."
I have two undergrad degrees, Engineering and Business. Thank God I was smart enough to get an engineering degree (plus my two professional registrations).
When there is a shortage of men, women become more aggressive. It has always happened after wars. The women have to compete harder with one another.
Sad but true.
Yes.
That is a heck of a response to the question, grey_whiskers...
Kinda sums up some (liberal / leftist) people's feelings, unfortunately...
...and infectious. Remember, herpes and hep-c are forever...
The real issue is the feminization of schooling, including k-12. Very little of intellectual substance happens in schools and colleges today outside of engineering and hard science. The k-12 education establishment today ensures that very few students will have the skills to go into those fields.
So, young men having had their fill of feminized schooling by the end of high school (assuming they don’t drop out), are certainly not going to sign up for more of it at an outrageous cost when the only degrees in reach are worthless. Engineering and science are out of the question because the femininists and their beta male friends have destroyed the math curricula and science in k-12 (reading, too).
But, at least everyone knows really important stuff like who Gloria Steinem and Harriet Tubman were...
