The Thrill Is Gone:NYT:Obama’s Relationship With America Is Growing Sour
New York Times ^ | June 18, 2010 | Charles M. Blow

Posted on 06/19/2010 7:59:26 AM PDT by lbryce

President Obama’s relationship with America, like many a young marriage, is growing sour.

That’s my surmise after reviewing recent polling and watching the carping that followed his Oval Office speech (which I thought was just fine, by the way).

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the magic has drained away. Even among his most ardent supporters, there now exists a certain frustration and disillusionment — not necessarily in the execution of his duties, but in his inability to seize moments, chart a course and navigate the choppy waters of public opinion.

What’s left for many is a big plume of disappointment and sadness lurking just beneath the surface.

Desperate to escape eight-years of an abusive relationship with a reckless cowboy and scared by a calculating John McCain who chose a feckless running mate, America was charmed by Obama’s supernal speeches and inspired by his vision of a happier ever after.

But once the marriage was official, reality set in and Obama tried to lower expectations. Life would not be lit by the soft glow of an eternal sunrise. Change would come slowly; pain would be felt presently; things would get worse before they got better.

In addition, he had to make tough choices (and not always the right ones) to steer us out of our darkest hour and secure a better future. He wasn’t always elegant in method or clear in message, and that allowed the more cynical side of America to find a footing and feed its fear.

This has left many on the left duking it out in a death match of finger-pointing, back-biting and navel-gazing. They have gone from applauding to defending, a turn many secretly resent and increasingly reject.

Sarah Palin is hardly feckless.

What a typically stupid effing opinion piece from the NY Times.

Obama's not doing anything wrong, the people are just failing to properly appreciate him. He simply underestimated how hard it would be to make the dumb masses understand his awesomeness.

Blow is trying to attain some credibility by showing that he too can be critical of the messiah but Blow is still an idiot. He says America needs to lower its expectations. I would remind the Blower that this is the same Barack Hussein Obama who in his acceptance speech promised to defeat poverty, disease and climate change. He as much as promised to wave a magic wand over the country and cure all ills. If expectations are too high it is the fault of the totally inexperienced and unqualified, even on a mere constitutional basis, long legged turkey who said that when he was nominated the planet began to heal and the seas stopped rising.

If Charles M. Blow had an ounce of brains to blow out he would drop the B from his last name and add a small e to the end. Charles M. Lowe would at least sound like someone who could possibly have a brain.

Blow, you have defined NPD:

“On the other side stands Obama — solid and sober, rooted in the belief that his way is the right way and in no need of alteration. He’s the emotionally maimed type who lights up when he’s stroked and adored but shuts down in the face of acrimony. Other people’s anxieties are dismissed as irrational and unworthy of engagement or empathy. He seems quite comfortable with this aspect of his personality, even if few others are, and shows little desire to change it. It’s the height of irony: the presumed transformative president is stymied by his own unwillingness to be transformed. He would rather sacrifice the relationship than be altered by it.”

They're just upset he hasn't been as slippery as Clinton in avoiding public scrutiny. If he had done everything just the same as he has, but his approval rating was still high among independents etc., the Obama disciples would still be every bit as happy with him as they were on election day.

Now to make it believable why not call for impeachment of the Idiot..It would look very good on your head lines you would sell lots of papers..

Having only seen brief video clips of his Oval Office speech, I had the distinct impression that BO is actually shrinking before our very eyes. The flags were tall and imposing, while he reminded one of a skinny middle-schooler sitting behind his father’s desk. Weird.

It looked like his handlers were trying to make him look "presidential". That's an impossible task.

“...scared by a calculating John McCain who chose a feckless running mate,”

...as opposed to the Dems, who chose a do-nothing anti-white, anti-capitalist Socialist as their presidential candidate. It is pathetic to see Black Democrats contorting themselves into pretzels trying to defend this poseur, who shares absolutely nothing in common with the American Black experience.

... there is a difference between a bleeding heart liberal and a cold blooded fascist.

I was hoping they'd learnd just the opposite: that every bleeding heart liberal is also a cold-blooded fascist. In order to protect and raise up those who have managed to secure their sympathy, the liberal will turn into a vicious master every time, crushing all those not his pets.

On one side is America — fickle and excitable, hotheaded and prone to overreaction, easily frightened and in constant need of reassurance.

There is so much wrong with this statement, ones doesn't know where to start!

On the other side stands Obama — solid and sober, rooted in the belief that his way is the right way and in no need of alteration. He’s the emotionally maimed type who lights up when he’s stroked and adored but shuts down in the face of acrimony

i.e., he's a narcissist. -

this poor writer is having a hard time hanging onto his ethnic loyalty...he sees the truth starring him in the face, but he so wants it not to be so...

“President Obama’s relationship with America, like many a young marriage”

What an idiot! Obama’s relationship with America is nothing like a marriage. It is more like a street thug and an innocent passerby or a car jacker and a motorist. The Obama thugs are robbing Americans blind and destroying our country. Luckily, a growing number of Americans are finally starting to figure it out.The NYT is lying. As they always do.

“Of course he thought it was fine.”

With 96% percent of the black vote going to Obama, what else would you expect? I’m just surprised that so many blacks are STILL wearing their kneepads, and defending this disaster of a president. I guess race trumps reality every time.

I knew I shouldn’t, but I clicked through and read the entire Blow column. It was supposed to be about Obama, but he just couldn’t help from taking swipes at McCain, Bush, Palin, and the American public at large. His “calm down, everything will be all right” condescending tone is incredible, given how quickly we’re being driven over the cliff by a clueless doofus who has his foot mashed down on the gas!

I agree with other posters here. We really can’t wait for 2012, we have to keep loudly pointing out how Obama is totally unfit to hold the office of POTUS, and most likely legally ineligible as well.
