Lawmaker to press ahead with Arizona-type immigration law for Texas

DALLAS - Illegal immigration in Texas and what to do about it. It's as hot an issue as the weather.

A state lawmaker says he'll press ahead with a bill to bring an Arizona-type immigration law to Texas, even though he claims there's a deal by the House Speaker, Joe Straus, to keep it from coming up.

Although opponents of an Arizona-type law in Texas turned out thousands of marchers last month, polls show public opinion overall disagrees with them.

The recent UT-Texas Tribune poll found two thirds of registered voters favor requiring local police to check immigration status.

That's why Republican State Representative Leo Berman of Tyler said during a taping of Inside Texas Politics he'll file his bill. “Well, when every other state around us is passing dramatic legislation to get rid of their illegal aliens I've got to say yes," he said.

Many Hispanic groups and Democrats say no.

And Berman's also getting pushback inside his own party, starting with Governor Perry who said, “I think our law enforcement folks have more important things to do than doing the federal government's job of going out and being immigration officers.”

But Berman has to get his bill through the House first where he claims Speaker Joe Straus of San Antonio, a Republican, cut a deal with a small group of Republicans and all the Democrats to stay in power.

This and the oil spill could be the coup de grace for the start of secession starting with the South and going up the mid-west to the plain states.

Oh dear, looks like you folks need a new speaker. Perhaps the people should be calling and writing to his office asking him how he’d like to retire.

Every State, Every State ought be doing it. If the feds will not enforce the law then the other jurisdictions must, exactly like any other criminal law.

The current federal administration has a secret agenda to only enforce the laws the executive branch says; and ignore others. Is that corruption?

Berman has to get his bill through the House first where he claims Speaker Joe Straus of San Antonio, a Republican, cut a deal with a small group of Republicans and all the Democrats to stay in power.

If this is so, then it is very worrisome. I'm going to pass this data on to my Texas House rep, who by the way, favors an Arizona-style immigration bill for Texas.

Apparently, Speaker Joe Straus and Governor Perry are working for someone besides the people of Texas.

We need to raise a ruckus, folks.

Every State, Every State ought be doing it.

IF this bill gets signed into law and other states follow suit, then Barry is going to be awful busy filing law suits

As the Chamber’s presiding officer, I believe my job as Speaker begins with listening: listening to the diverse members of the Texas House, and listening to the people of Texas who sent us to Austin to represent them.

Welcome to my web site!

Doesn't sound like the same guy

We have a republican who’s against the AZ bill and a democrat trying to defeat him who’s against the AZ bill. There will be no secession. Texas has weak kneed republicans just like the ones in D.C. Such a shame.

If this is from the liberal bastion of the Lone Star State, then you can bet it's favored three times the reported amount.

“Need a new Speaker, need a a new governor.”

Agreed! However, for Gov. Goodhair we’ll have to wait for a new election cycle unless you want to vote for Bill White, who doesn’t believe you should have to show a photo ID to vote. Perry is bad. White is much worse.
