Top general in Afghan war apologizes for profile

The top U.S. war commander in Afghanistan apologized Tuesday for an interview in which he said he felt betrayed by the man the White House chose to be his diplomatic partner, Ambassador Karl Eikenberry. An article out this week in Rolling Stone magazine depicts Gen. Stanley McChrystal as a lone wolf on the outs with many important figures in the Obama administration and unable to convince even some of his own soldiers that his strategy can win the war.

A band of McChrystal's profane, irreverent aides are quoted mocking Vice President Joe Biden and Richard Holbrooke, the special U.S. representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

On Tuesday, McChrystal issued a statement saying: "I extend my sincerest apology for this profile. It was a mistake reflecting poor judgment and should never have happened."

In Rolling Stone, McChrystal is described by an aide as "disappointed" in his first Oval Office meeting with an unprepared President Barack Obama. The article says that although McChrystal voted for Obama, the two failed to connect from the start. Obama called McChrystal on the carpet last fall for speaking too bluntly about his desire for more troops.

"I found that time painful," McChrystal said in the article, on newsstands Friday. "I was selling an unsellable position."

Obama agreed to dispatch an additional 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan only after months of study that many in the military found frustrating. And the White House's troop commitment was coupled with a pledge to begin bringing them home in July 2011, in what counterinsurgency strategists advising McChrystal regarded as an arbitrary deadline.

McChrystal troops request shelved pending review

In a bleak assessment prepared last month and leaked to the media in recent days, McChrystal wrote that his mission would likely fail if he is not given reinforcements for his force, now more than 100,000 strong, including about 63,000 Americans.

The additional troops would be needed as part of a complete overhaul of tactics, with new emphasis on securing civilians in population centres to loosen the grip of a strengthening Taliban-led insurgency.

The White House says it wants to review the entire strategy for the region before considering McChrystal's request.

"Right now the focus is on the strategic assessment itself. It (the troop request) will be shelved until such time that the White House is ready," a defence official said in Washington.

McChrystal requested 63000 US troops and got 30,000.

He should resign. And the CIC should resign as well.

He might deserve what’s coming, but a lot of the rank and file don’t.

It’s sad, really.

Sounds like McChrystal and Obama are both incompetent.

It also seems like McChrystal may WANT to get the boot before the shit really hits the fan over there. Why leak all that to Rolling Stone otherwise?

An unnamed adviser to McChrystal alleges the general came away unimpressed after a meeting with Obama in the Oval Office a year ago, just after the president named him to take over in Afghanistan.

“It was a 10-minute photo op,” the general’s adviser says.

“Obama clearly didn’t know anything about him, who he was... he didn’t seem very engaged.

“The boss was pretty disappointed,” says the adviser.

The profile, titled “The Runaway General,” portrays his aides as profane and intensely loyal to McChrystal, while arguing the general has seized control over the war on the military and diplomatic fronts.

The four-star general also derides the hard-charging top US envoy to the region, Richard Holbrooke, and complains about a dinner with an unnamed French minister during a visit to Paris.

“Oh, not another e-mail from Holbrooke,” McChrystal says, looking at his messages on a mobile phone. “I don’t even want to open it.”

In a hotel room in Paris getting ready for a dinner with a French official, McChrystal says: “How’d I get screwed into going to this dinner?”

“The dinner comes with the position, sir,” says his aide, Colonel Charlie Flynn.

“Hey, Charlie,” McChrystal says, “does this come with the position?”

McChrystal gives him the middle finger.

McChrystal (and his staff) is unprofessional and should resign immediately. If he refuses to do so, Obama should fire him. Not even a four-star has the right to show disrespect to our commander in chief, regardless of whether or not the president is a jerk. McChrystal has violated Art 88 of the UCMJ:

Art. 88. Contempt toward officials

Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Homeland Security, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

If those quotes from McCrystal are accurate, then he’s no longer fit to command (assuming he ever was). It’s time to make way for someone who knows what they’re doing.

That is the point, one never really has to look far to find someone who has used opportunities to climb the ladder because of their ineptness to do so by the use of character and nose to the grindstone principles.

So when Zero’s administration went looking for someone to lead their knowingly failiing effort, there is always some ass kissing opportunist to jump in and say “pick me”. They knew what they were getting because it is what they wanted. So now Stanley feels unappreciated and throws a hissy fit.

F him! He made his bed, and nobody else wants to sleep in it.

There was no mystery about Obama prior to the election. He was an inexpericed politician with zero leadership background, and it wasn’t hard to find his socialist connections in his personal bio.

If mcChrystal couldn’t discern that and voted for the man, then McChrystal is intellectually shallow and has no business being in charge

The article says that although McChrystal voted for Obama

It doesn't surprise me.

McChrystal is a wack job. He suffers from massive narcissism, wicked OCD, and a myriad of other mental problems.

He sleeps 4 hours a night, eats only one meal per day, and must run 100 miles a week. He has to wear only certain running shoes and shorts, or everything is "ruined." He banned all fast food joints for our front line troops. He walks around like a prince, and has an entourage that rivals that of Puff Daddy.

a) Is he queer?

b) Corollary question: is the apparent surfeit of perfumed princes in the Halls of the Pentagon a mirror image of the Gramscian strategy of flooding the seminaries with queers (which resulted in the large number of child-molestation charges against the clergy, bankrupting, weakening, and discrediting the moral mission of the Catholic Church)?

Cheers!
