Isn’t pretty much any non-Muslim considered an ‘infidel’, because I thought according to the Koran, everybody is born a Muslim.

Yes. But non-muslims supposedly have *some* rights when living as “Dhimmis” under muslim rule. You are a second class citizen, but can be a citizen and have legal rights. (Note this is not what I believe, but what scholars of Islam such as Bernard Lewis say...)

You can supposedly even convert to Islam and be a full member of the club with all privileges, an equal.

However, if you are an Apostate, one who has renounced Islam, there is only one place for you: Dead.
