Whooping cough is now an epidemic in California, and is on pace to break a 50-year record for infections and deaths for the year.
As of June 15, California had 910 recorded cases of the highly contagious disease, and five babies -- all under 3 months of age -- have died from the disease this year.
This year's surge in whooping cough cases, which is also known as pertussis, is a fourfold increase from the same period last year, when 219 cases were recorded.
At least 600 additional cases of pertussis are currently under investigation by local health departments.
Health officials say whooping cough is cyclical and tends to peak every two to five years.
A typical case of the disease starts with a cough and runny nose for one to two weeks, followed by weeks or months of rapid coughing fits that sometimes end with a whooping sound. Fever is rare.

Amen... And so did many others. Same results with varicella vaccine also.
I hear that illegals from Mexico are bringing tuberculosis into the country. Yet, Obama would rather go to war with Arizona for trying to stop this sort of madness.
It’s those dang Amish again...
In San Diego County, we’re having a real run of it .. brought in from illegals .. no doubt .. since they do not innoculate their children.
In the County warnings, we have been advised to get a booster shot.
There is probably a reason the bacteria was named " "Bordetella pertussis"
;-)
From 1999 to now, the percent of kids vaccinated against Whooping cough fell from 96% to 93%. Guess what happened since 1999. Yup. Lots of illegals. And the % will just grow as those illegals keep coming and keep having more kids, not knowing their health care needs.
What baby Bush, Clinton, Obama, Daddy Bush and the rest of the open borders scum are doing to this nation is criminal. It is treason. They should all be hung.
It's not often remarked upon, but the public health threat posed by illegals is a.) substantial and b.) growing.
They are importing diseases that essentially no longer exist in the U.S. And they are bringing with them the hygenic habits that will spread them.
How many American children contract disease or infection by swimming in pools shared with illegals?
If I recall correctly, there have even been a few outbreaks of cholera in the South Texas colonias.
Legal immigrants have to pass a physical exam. But the illegals are bringing us bugs we simply don't need...
Ping!
Guess who pics our vegetables? Do you really think that illegals, who suffer from diarrhea from E. Coli or some of the nice worms and other parasites from improperly cooked pork, wash their hands in the fields?
Why do you think they have J. Lopez doing the ads for Pertussis vaccinations?
Add that to the public health risk.
As I recall, though, a lot of the infected vegetables have come from Mexico -- and irrigation with water polluted by human sewage.
But, undeniably, a lot has also come from their harvesting and handling of crops here in the USA.
For some reason, the public health risk never gets talked about. Yet, it should be one of the primary reasons to CLOSE THE BORDER!
Knows her stuff.
Not all vaccinations “take”—and vaccines provide a kind of firewall to mass infection to the unvaccinated generally, but there is a critical mass that can be built—
“In poor areas of Mexico the pluming is so bad they NEVER flush toilet paper it clogs the pluming.. so the have a bucket for used toilet paper”
I have seen the same bucket in toilets all over Miami, and throughout Florida where there were Messicans.
The same holds for the states in the West where there were significant numbers of Messicans.
Welcome to the Turd World, brought to you by your sullen, hostile, crime inclined, Messican neighbors.
An obscure (to me), but very interesting, story. Thanks for the background.
