Connecticut School Removes Lord Reference in High School Diplomas

Seniors at a New Haven, Conn., high school will not be graduating “in the year of our Lord” this year – or any future years, according to the superintendent of schools.

The school district has removed the traditional phrase from high school diplomas after someone complained.

“It’s a religious thing,” Superintendent Reginald Mayo told the New Haven Register. “I’m surprised it took this long for someone to notice it. We certainly don’t want to offend anyone.”

Last year, former alderwoman Ina Silverman filed a complaint about “in the year of our Lord" when her daughter was a student at Wilbur Cross High School. According to the newspaper, Silverman took her concerns to the mayor, who then asked the superintendent to remove the words.

Mayo told the newspaper it was a small change – but it was a necessary change. The American Humanist Association heralded the decision.

It’s not the first time the phrase has generated controversy. This year, a Muslim student at Trinity University in San Antonio petitioned to have the words removed from diplomas. The university, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of America, decided to keep “in the year of our Lord.”

Anyone know how long "Lord" has been in the High School diploma for New Haven Ct.?

It would seem we need to get rid of the current year counting system in that it is based on the “year of our Lord”.

It should read that Former Superintendent Reginald Mayo was relieved from office on June 23rd in the year of our Lord 2010.

I agree, YOMO.
This year is 2010 AD (Anno Domini—the “year of our Lord”).

Are we to adopt the Muslim calendar, or the Chinese calendar? What year is it for the Hindu folks?

We are a Judeo-Christian country, and we should be proud of our heritage.

Then this also means they should not use the year “2010” for anything

And Reginald should change his birthdate

100% emmasculated man.

This year, a Muslim student at Trinity University in San Antonio petitioned to have the words [“in the year of our Lord”]removed from diplomas.

If he's unhappy about that phrase, why is he attending a school named for a key doctrine of Christianity (the Trinity), one which is explicitly abhorred by Islam?

Well, Ms former alderwoman Ina Silverman, perhaps you should take a look at the US Constitution, specifically the final article.

Article. VII.
The Ratification of the Conventions of nine States, shall be sufficient for the Establishment of this Constitution between the States so ratifying the Same.

Attest William Jackson
Secretary

done in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven and of the Independence of the United States of America the Twelfth In witness whereof We have hereunto subscribed our Names,...

I don't know how long "Lord" has been in the New Haven High School diplomas, but if the use of the phrase "the year of our Lord" in identifying the date is offensive to anyone, then he/she must hate our Constitution and should therefore renounce his/her citizenship and get the hell out of this country.

You’re right, we will have to renumber the years and count differently.

What system shall we use? Is this the year 3, if we say the year 1 should be the year Obama was elected and America once again lived up to her highest ideals?

Or is this the year 7, if we count as year 1 the year that homosexual marriage started in America in Massachusetts?

Is it year 38, if we want to count from the time when women allegedly got their freedom, with Roe vs. Wade?

Is it the year 42, if we want to count from the Year of the Stonewall Rebellion and gay rights and all that stuff?

It would be the year 41 if we start at the time of the first Earth Day. Enviro radicals would be pleased with that.

Which liberal cause should be used to start a new calendar system?

The Left has already moved to historical dates from B.C. (Before Christ) to B.C.E. ("before Common Era").

This is why the secular Left is so sympathetic towards Islam: both movements seek to erase Christ's influence from the earth.

I had an argument with someone more liberal about “BCE”. I told them that “BCE” meant “BEFORE CHRISTIAN ERA”, and this person got flustered.

I would recommend everyone tell the liberals that “BCE” means before the Christian era, and that “CE” means Christian era, and see the reaction you get.

In revolutionary France, they started counting time from 1789. In 1790, they called it “Year One of the Revolution.” So maybe we should start counting from the birth of our Republic. Today would be 23 June Year 234 of the Revolution.
