The leader of Montgomery County's government employees union, accused by police of threatening to kill his wife and pointing a gun at her, is on leave for the next month, according to union members.
Multiple county employees told The Washington Examiner Wednesday that Gino Renne is on leave until mid-July. They did not want to be identified because the union is refusing to speak about the matter.
Renne did not return calls seeking comment, but his cell phone voice mail says he will be "out of the office until July 20."
Renne charged at his wife with a gun during a fight at their New Market home last month because she wanted to attend a birthday party, according to court records.
He faces charges of first-degree assault, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, which call for up to 25 years in prison.
Officials answering the phone at Renne's office refused to comment on his leave or whether he is still being paid.
Joan Renne told police her husband threw her on the bathroom floor and started choking her, enraged that she wanted to go to a birthday party. He screamed that she was a "[expletive] whore," "white trailer park trash" and "worthless," police said.
According to Frederick County court records, Joan Renne was "terrified" of what would happen to her if "police got involved and confronted her husband." Police arrested Renne at his Accipiter Drive home and took possession of his revolver.
Renne previously told The Examiner he would be vindicated of all charges and had no plans to leave his post. He has been a thorn for upper brass in county government, accusing them of not doing enough to reduce spending and giving favorable treatment to the school system while other county employees are being forced to take furloughs in coming months.
Figures.
Hope his wife has decided to be done with him.
This is Montgomery County, Maryland.
Must have mistaken her for a taxpayer.
