I haven't posted on this yet, but I think that McCrystal thought that he was a Fellow Traveler speaking to another Fellow Traveler, and that that made him safe. He thought it was fellow clubmembers joking amongst themselves.
He found out the hard way that he wasn't in the club like he thought he was.
