Woman sues church over gay marriage (Wants her tithes back after 37 years)
CNN ^ | 06/26/2010

Years before the nation's capital legalized same-sex marriage in March, one church in Washington, D.C., opened its doors to gay couples as part of its mission to establish an "inclusive body of Biblical believers."

Pastors Christine and Dennis Wiley performed a 2007 commitment ceremony at their altar. That action split the historically black church, prompting half of the congregation to leave.

Yvonne Moore not only left Covenant Baptist, where she had worshipped for nearly 40 years: she filed a lawsuit for her weekly tithes because, as she said, "They didn't respect the members enough to listen to us."

Moore said she attended the 2007 commitment ceremony and found it "totally disgusting."

"I don't believe in that, I'm southern Baptist," Moore told CNN's Soledad O'Brien. "The bible speaks against that. You cannot take that in the church."

So she sued the church for a portion of the estimated $250,000 that she estimates she had paid in weekly donations over the past 37 years.

It’s one thing to invite gays (sinners) to church to hear the gospel. It’s quite another to condone their wicked hell-bound behavior by condoning and performing a ‘commitment’ ceremony. The ‘pastor’ should be horsewhipped.

The lady’s right. Protestant churches are supposedly governed by their members (who chose the pastors, etc., unlike the Catholic Church, where our pastors are appointed by our bishops), and by this standard, a large number of these churches are going against the will of the majority of their members, who seem to be more orthodox than the pastors. Maybe some other mainline Protestants should start suing their churches.

Sadly, though, the trend is going in the other direction. The leadership of these churches often successfully manages to marginalize the faithful, and I think you’ll see more and more in the future that the courts support the heretical “leadership” over the people who pay their salaries. So I wish this lady well, but I’d be surprised if she wins.

Only those groups that are unbiblical, similar to the Catholic church that hides its pedophiles and pornographers. None of these organizations are Christians and the Scripture clearly outlines how to handle this problem...avoid them as unbelievers.

Would their children be considered black or ginger? Poor little things will have a lifetime of pain just because of who their parents were .

This makes no sense to me. Presumably she was happy with the church during the years she attended it. If she stops donating after leaving the congregation, then she’s not supporting its current direction.

Is it one of those “it's the thought that counts” things ? I thought of tithing when I wrote the check ,(counted) but I tore it up , when they admitted gays .

Yes. I don’t think she will have much success. She would have to prove that the church had deceived her while they were taking her money. If a church goes bad they should not be liable for the time when they weren’t bad.

The IRS would be HAPPY if this woman prevails! They will be overjoyed to tax the amount returned and collect interest on the years that the deduction was taken.

What about that makes no sense? She, along with half the congregation, were disgusted with the pastors and felt their church and alter were defiled. The church was owned by her and the other parishioners so she feels she deserves to be paid her portion of ownership. No, it won't get anywhere in the courts, but I understand what she feels is her right.

The leadership (man) of the churches are like the leadership of the this country.

The church leaders are ignoring the Bible and our country’s leaders are ignoring the Constitution.

The leadership is only interested in power and maintaining that power....both sets are ignorant and corrupt.....
