Germany's Thomas Mueller scored twice in the second half to seal a 4-1 victory that put Germany into the quarterfinals and sent England packing with the sting of its most lopsided loss in a World Cup.

That was a severe blow for Cameron who earlier had told journalists he was "desperate for us to win." England has not beaten Germany since it won the 1966 final.

World Cup 2010: England, my England
I can’t bear to read tomorrow’s papers after England’s exit from the World Cup. It’s not as if we don’t know what the pundits will say. Some will blame the pampered, overpaid players. Others will blame the manager, calling for his head if he hasn’t already fallen on his sword already. Expect several commentators to declare that it’s time for the so-called golden generation to retire from international football, having failed to win a single trophy. Some may even be quite kind, pointing out that the Premier League is more gruelling than the Bundislega. Almost all will quote that John Cleese line from Clockwork: “It’s not the despair, Laura. I can take the despair. It’s the hope I can’t stand.”

Next time the English national team goes to a tournament they need to double-check their packing. Someone apparently left the defense at home.

Before the game started, a funny joke was making the rounds:

Why is the World Cup like World War II?

The French are out,
The Italians are useless, and
The Americans are late to the game.

The backstory on England has been their goaltender issues.

One was known as Calamity James and the one who tended the goal during the game against America the first time simply let the ball get away from him.

Goaltending was their weak link and there was nothing to be done for it.

Greene was the first victim of that ball. FIFA has now admitted that there are problems with it, and it’s been making keepers look like Bozos for the last two weeks. Nevertheless, all the teams had the ball in advance, so its speed, weight, and slickness shouldn’t have come as a surprise. When USA’s Tim Howard made a two-hand save yesterday, he used his hands, his arms, and his chest, taking no chances.

Yeah, but Howard should have never allowed that first goal, very slow reaction on a relatively slow rolling ball.

Germany is going to take the cup.

As you said on the other thread, today’s game by the German team was a clinic for how the game should be played.
