If government just stopped protecting the tobacco industry, it would be sued out of existance in a very short time. But they will never let that happen, because they want that tax money.

No they wouldn't. You can't sue a product that may or may not kill you after non-addictive free choice use for decades. Peanut butter would be and a millions other things else under that hazy, precautionary principal view.
