I remember Ted visiting Iowa while running against fellow Democrat Jimmah Cahtah, the sitting president. He was addressing a group of farmers in SE Iowa at a grain elevator when he abruptly asked the crowd, “How's the service out here on the Wabash ?”
This question, asked of no one in particular, stunned the assembled Iowegians. It had been more than 100 years since the mighty Wabash had served Iowa.
It was later reported that someone in Kennedy's office had visited a local library and had confused Iowa history with current events.
