Fighting for the flag – Massachusetts school refuses to lift ban on the Pledge of Allegiance
The Examiner.com ^ | june 30, 2010 | Todd Kinsey

Last month I wrote an article regarding the involvement of SEIU and Moveon.org urging members to vote in a Fox News poll to support a California school district's decision to ban the flag in schools. Of course this article was not well received by the Marxist's that support these two organizations. I received hate mail and threats of violence from the supposed peace loving liberals.

Now we have another case in Arlington Massachusetts where high school Principal Charles Skidmore has banned the pledge of allegiance from being recited in the classroom.

Sean Harrington, a senior at Arlington High School is leading the fight to get the Pledge of Allegiance back in the classroom said "I believe we owe it to those who fought."

Last week Harrington presented a petition to the Arlington School Committee that included signatures of Senator John Kerry and Joe Lieberman supporting the pledge, however, the committee voted to uphold the ban in a 3-3 decision. Principal Charles Skidmore has agreed to allow the pledge to be said before school in the lobby and believes this is a fair compromise.

Well I disagree with Mr. Skidmore and believe the students have a right to say the pledge in the classroom. I also respect the rights of the students who wish not to recite the pledge who can quietly sit in their seats for the 15 seconds it takes to recite the pledge.

Kathleen Bodie, the superintendent of schools told Fox News "the principal wanted to be very respectful about the pledge and be sensitive to the Supreme Court ruling that students are not forced to say the pledge. He wanted to be sensitive to the diverse group of students we have." Of course that group is in the minority but in the name of political correctness and tolerance we have to placate the minority. Well Mrs. Bodie, how about the rights of the majority?

Mrs. Bodie also brought up the words "Under God." Well Mrs. Bodie, nowhere in the constitution does it say anything about the liberal buzz words "separation of church and state." What it does say is that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." What that means is that our government will not establish a national religion such as Christianity, Islam, or environmentalism.

Harrington said he intends to continue the fight, "I'm not a person who quits and I don't back down. It's a very righteous cause and needs to be followed through until the end."

If you agree, the school's contact information is listed below:

Arlington High School Principal Charles Skidmore (781) 316-3591 Principal (781) 316-3594 main

Superintendent - Dr. Kathleen Bodie (781) 316-3501 mailto:kbodie@arlington.k12.ma.us

Let's put a halt to this all out assault on liberty. See you in the trenches...

Why don’t the MA State Senators get their rears in gear?

This is such a pathetic display of citizenship except for the kids fighting for the Flag and that which it stands for.

I’ve got to hand it to the liberals. They’ve degraded my respect for government to a point where it doesn’t bother me that they won’t allow the pledge of allegience.

Diverse how? Do they have a lot of students who owe no allegiance to the United States?

My hat is off to the patriotic kids. They have more spirit than their cretin principal who cowers to minorities.

My question is: What gives this moron the right to ban free speech?

Fire the traitor!

I hate to defend Ole Horseface, but I read on a thread last night that Kerry had written a letter to the school board asking them to allow the pledge.

“I received hate mail and threats of violence from the supposed peace loving liberals.”

Could you flesh that out a little bit? How many emails, how many snail mails, how many phone calls etc. What did they say specifically?

The reason I ask is to document such behavior and how independent bloggers and reporters are targeted. If you want to do it privately that’s fine. I would appreciate any info.

Thanks,
Irish Catholic.

Public schools do it every day. They call free speech, "divisive." Just ask the kids in CA with the US flag shirts.

I get it now, what bothers liberals about the Pledge. They object to the phrase, "One nation under God".

But they are interpreting that phrase as, "the only nation under God."

They see it, mistakenly, as a theocratic indoctrination tool.

If I were this student, then now I would make it a point of coming into the school lobby and loudly reciting the pledge in front of the flag. And if his friends do it, too, and others join in, then he will be making a statement.

that’s right, the schools who will teach the kids about Islam then have a fit if they want to pray as Christians

I know public schools do it every day.

That doesn’t change the fact that it is wrong. The hypocrites are paid by Americans who pay taxes. For them who bleed the taxpayers dry and then turn around and ban the Pledge of Alegiance is despicable.

They should be sent to Afghanistan.

You are correct, GE. But then, this is Massachusetts; and the Bay State is a socialist state.

You’ll recall that John Adams wrote the Constitution of Massachusetts. It is the oldest, written, continuousy operating document of its kind in the world. In the preamble, Adams referred to God as “the Great Legislator in the sky.”

I am certain that Mr. Adams is spinning in his grave. He must be ashamed of his fellow Bay Staters.

Another reason why I have to question why I stay in this state. When I was a kid I went to school in Lowell. The school was staffed by French-Canadian nuns. The first thing we did in the morning was to say the Notre-Pere and the Pledge of Allegience. Mind you, not one of these nuns was an American citizen, yet they made sure that we understood that we were Americans and that our duty and loyalty was to God and our country.
Please forgive the rant.

“Why don’t the MA State Senators get their rears in gear?”

It’s called let the kids do the fighting, so they don’t have to jump into the fray, and possibly lose votes of any constituents by supporting one side, or the other on this.

Most Politicians are Weasel’s.

Liberals don’t like the pledge? It seems to me they ought to love it. After all, the “one nation . . . indivisible” clause is one of the core tenets of their 10th Amendment suffocating faith. Maybe they should be concerned that conservatives may be having second thoughts about buying into it because of that particular clause.

Which is it, God or COUNTRY that is offensive to the “diverse” student population or perhaps BOTH words?
