A few readers have asked for a fuller version of Chris Christie's discussion of immigration, which Maggie Haberman and I wrote about today.
So here's a bit more detail on his view, on an issue on which he said President Obama must "show the leadership."
"What I support is making sure that the federal government [plays] each and every one of its roles: Securing the border, enforcing immigration laws, and having an orderly process -- whatever that process is -- for people to gain citizenship."
He added: "It's a very easy issue to demagogue and I'm just not going to participate in that."
Christie said more resources -- specifically, "money" -- were needed to support federal law enforcement and border security, along with "having a clear understandable law that people can follow."
"Until you have both of those...you're not going to fix the problem," he said.
Christie also said he thinks state and local law enforcement don't have appropriate training to enforce immigration laws, and that it can distract from their overriding goal of keeping the public safe.
I really like this guy. I just hope we don’t find out he’s a transvestite or something in a few months. Politicians always end up disappointing.
Except that in border states, enforcing immigration laws is part of public safety. I would imagine the same applies for the rest of the country, but in border states it is especially critical.
Pgyanke also said he thinks state and local law enforcement begins with enforcing immigration laws, and that will help focus their overriding goal of keeping the public safe.
Sounds like he would be happy with amnesty.
I am going out on a limb here by saying I think this is a dodge. So far I like Cristie otherwise.
Christie is for amnesty. He supports the amnesty bill of 2007.
Well it overlaps. A violent crime is supposed to be pursued regardless of citizenship status of the perp. I would say that areas with high numbers of illegals will have higher incidence of crime. Only natural since they come from countries with no real law enforcement.
Why didn’t Politico release the entire transcript in the first place.
This puts Christie’s comments in a much different context than originally reported by Politicobama.
I haven’t really made my mind up about this guy yet.
I admire him for standing up to the NJEA, but it seems to me he’s dodging this question, and although N.J. is not a border state, we still have plenty of problems with illegals.
At least 22 hospitals have gone bankrupt and shut down due to “too much charity work”. Illegals who go to the emergency room since they cannot be denied care, and never pay a dime.

I think some are being too harsh - sure he is leaning the wrong way on some stuff but dont forget that in order to get here, he had to make sausage in one of the most corrupt democrat states in the country.

Illegal aliens cost NJ taxpayers $2.1 billion per year in 3 areas: medical care, education, and incarceration. This amount is doubled or tripled if one includes such things as ESL classes, school lunches and breakfasts, translators in courts and hospitals, food stamps, subsidized housing, lost income and lower wages for US workers, higher health and car insurance, etc.
Remember not all illegal aliens mow lawns, some (visa overstays) compete with professionals in medicine, IT, etc. It is disgustingly easy to do.

I know all about the green card workers.
I work in IT. They’ve driven down the rates by at least 1/3. What’s even worse is that the State hires them before hiring citizens because they are considered minorities. Doesn’t matter if they are a citizen or not, thanks to Affirmative Action.

If they can enforce all other laws, they can AND SHOULD enforce Immigration laws.
THere simply are TOO MANY illegals and TOO FEW immigration officers.
Christie FAILS the conservative “smell test” on immigration and the Second Amendment.
