Michael Steele Must Go
Fox News ^ | 07/02/2010 | Christian Whiton

Republicans still have time to transform their concern about the explosion in the size of our government into a directed political force that sweeps elections this November. The single person who can now do the most to make this happen is RNC Chairman Michael Steele. How? By resigning.

The latest mark against Steele is the apparent exposure of a personal belief deeply at odds with Republican philosophy. Yesterday, Mr. Steele said of the war in Afghanistan that “this was a war of Obama’s choosing.” ...

Indeed, major donors have deserted the RNC. The DNC has led the RNC in fundraising. RNC headquarters is in chaos. Since February, some sixteen people have fled the communications shop alone. Novice candidates--precisely the kind of outsiders the party needs to shed its image as just another corrupt facet of Washington--have looked in vain for help from the RNC...

Everyone makes mistakes, but Mr. Steele has failed at virtually all of the tasks expected of him. He is gaffe prone, off message, and has repelled rather than attracted RNC donors. His comments on Afghanistan, reminiscent of isolationists who called World War II “Mr. Roosevelt’s war,” and who were kept out of office by voters as a result, ought to be the last straw.

There is still time for Republicans to take full advantage of overwhelming concern at the expansion of government and the shortcomings of the Obama administration. Doing so requires funneling broad discontent at Washington into a few basic principles and plans--and then communicating them clearly.

At a time when national Republicans have no natural communications platform, finding a good RNC chairman is key. Michael Steele can do the GOP a great service by triggering a search for one with his own resignation.

Obama had said that the Iraq War was the wrong war and that Afghanistan was the “right war”. It is Obama’s war and he should own up to it.

Either commit to the mission or pull out now.

He can’t vote “present” on this one.

major donors have deserted the RNC

I say that was more the result of the RINO's running out of control for years, acting like demolite, not just the steel fellow.

I don't know anyone that donates to the Republican party anymore, I haven't in years. No way am I giving any money to a group that is no better than the democrats.....what I don't get, if the Republicans want more power, they could have it easily if they acted like conservatives!! They would never be removed from office!!!

Steel does not go because a rat says so. Steel goes because We decided it was time.
Rats do not pull the nations cart they sit in it. And they will not drive ours again

Regardless of Steele, money donated to the RNC just goes to get RINOs (a.k.a. "moderates") elected. If you want to help the conservative cause, you have to donate directly to the campaigns of specific conservative Republican, Tea Party, or whatever, candidates.

No such thing as a "conservative Democrat" so I'd never ever waste my money or vote on a D. Whatever one might say, when push comes to shove they always vote with their Marxist party leaders on the key issues - even the so-called "conservative" ones. Dems are always party over principle.

State parties can have a huge affect. Here in Florida the conservatives took back their party. Stelle came down and tried to rescue the former chair and salvage Crist. But he was run out. Steele and Sen. Cornyn...both slimely scumbags fought for Crist all the way. The RNC is run by a bunch of whiney consultants. Tea party or local parties are the way to go.

Somewhere in the last 5 - 6 years they have lost me, I think for the duration.

I now contribute only directly to candidates of my choice, and typically vote Republican for the stirring reason that the GOP is less hideous than the Democrats.

Sarah Palin was the last candidate I was happy to vote.

‘...you have to donate directly to the campaigns of specific conservative Republican, Tea Party, or whatever, candidates....’

agree. I began doing that 2 years ago. imho, the RNC proved totally ineffective.....lost the WH, the Senate and the House.....why should I continue to give them money?

As a once member of the Steele fan club, I assure you that no wrath has been earned. I would however like to know the context of his remark before passing final judgement.

First the strip club thing and now this. This guy just does and says stupid things. Even the fan club should see that he is not the guy for the job. If the RNC boot him now, maybe he won’t be able to sabotage the November elections.

“I donate to conservatives directly, The GOP is far far far from being trusted again.”

Seconded!

Some time ago I was returning two or three RNC solicitations in their sase telling Steele to get his act together and start supporting the right people in NY 23, the Mass Senate race, etc. There’s been some improvement since, I must say. Steele seems to have stopped sending me those solicitations.
