But by 1963, hunting, loss of prey, and the use of pesticides reduced their numbers until only 417 breeding pairs remained.

This, of course, is a crock. Their numbers (and those of other raptors) were reduced by shooting (not really hunting), not pesticides.

Too bad Bill hadn't been showing the eagle to Monica when it decided to take a bite.
