Parking Dispute Prompts Standoff In Bethel Park
WPXI - Pittsburgh ^ | July 1st, 2010

BETHEL PARK, Pa. -- Bethel Park police said a standoff that shut down an industrial park started with a dispute over a parking space.

Mark Schavone, 52, surrendered to police shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday after he was holed up in the New Matics Manufacturing building, where he worked, authorities said.

Police said Schavone got into a verbal dispute with an employee of a neighboring company over a parking space in a lot between the two buildings on Progress Boulevard.

The verbal dispute turned physical, with Schavone then breaking away from the fight, authorities said.

Police said Schavone went back into the building and fired shots inside the New Matics building.

The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team was called to surround the building and try to contact the suspect.

Schavone came out of the business after talking with a member of the special response team. Police said he came out without incident.

There were no injuries reported, but a nearby business was evacuated and the industrial park was closed while the standoff was taking place, police said.

Schavone is facing simple assault and criminal mischief charges.

NewMatics PM16 and Laser Sim Urban Warfare/CQB Training System. Exclusive Video!

I’ll just come right out and say it: if the the NewMatics PM16 Government Model PCP (Pre-Charged Pneumatic) Rifle/Carbine performs as advertised–and based on DefRev’s conversations so far with its designer/developer, Mark Schavone, we have every reason to believe that it does–it is a major advance in combat simulation tools, and can drastically improve the marksmanship and fighting capabilities of U.S. combat troops, law enforcement personnel, and Homeland Security-minded citizens. DefRev is therefore going to do whatever’s necessary to get our hands on one of these little bad boys ASAP–and we’re going to run the hell out of it.

O.k., now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into what the NewMatics PM16 Government Model is. Basically, it’s a patented select-fire M16/M4 style air rifle/carbine that fires extremely inexpensive 15gr .22 Cal. copper-clad lead balls. The PM16 is the brainchild of NewMatics, Inc. CEO Mark "Doc" Schavone. Schavone designed and developed the PM16 to mimic EXACTLY the felt-recoil impulse, shooting characteristics, and operational and handling aspects of the M16 rifle/M4 Carbine, even though it’s air-powered and fires the aforementioned .22 cal. ball ammo. That’s right, an airgun that simulates the recoil and operation of a real M16/M4, without the associated dangers and high ammo cost. Pretty cool, huh?

Hmmmm...

Well, I’m going to come right out and say this: carpooling would go a long way to prevent hosing down the parking lot with testosterone over a parking space!

The American Rifleman had a story about the first repeating rifle, it was an airgun.

It was in the October 2006 issue and starts on page 66.

Girandoni Air Rifle

The Girandoni Air Rifle was an airgun designed by Bartholomäus Girandoni circa 1779.
The weapon was also known as the “Windbüchse”,
which means “wind rifle” in German.

This happened very close to where I work. We heard the sirens and the police asked us to open one of our back gates so they could enter the buiness park. My boss called me to open it. I was kind of leary, what with me wandering into a potential shooting zone and all.
As an aside, my company never closed for this, even though the shooter was really close. The question was aksed: If one of us got taken hostage, would he get paid for the time or would they have docked him?

It depends on if you kept working. If you were all sitting in the lunch room, you’re on break. ;)

HAhaha would make waiting on customers interesting:
Excuse me Mister Gunman, but I have to rip this sheet of Plywood into 20 inch strips. Can you point that gun somewhere else because I am afraid that it distracts me and I might cut my hand off.
