Democratic senator's lead shrinks in California: poll

(Reuters) - Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer's edge over Republican challenger Carly Fiorina has dwindled to 3 points as she seeks re-election in November, with more Californians now holding an unfavorable view of the three-term senator, a poll released on Thursday showed.

Boxer, who once held a 30-point lead over Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett Packard and a political novice, is now ahead by a margin of only 47 percent to 44 percent, the Field Poll found.

One of President Barack Obama's staunchest allies who has become a powerful liberal voice in the Senate since she was first elected in 1992, Boxer is facing her toughest challenge yet, as a wave of anti-incumbent sentiment sweeps the nation.

California, normally a reliably Democratic state suffering from double-digit unemployment and a budget deficit running into tens of billions of dollars, is considered a potential bellwether in the coming congressional elections.

The Field Poll found that since January more Californians have become disgruntled with Boxer, with 52 percent of likely voters holding an unfavorable view of her, compared with just 41 percent who regard her favorably.

Boxer's ratings have dropped to some of the lowest levels of her 18-year career in the Senate, with only 42 percent of registered voters approving of her job performance and 43 percent disapproving.

And this before Fiorina has really begun to spend the vast resources she has at her disposal to bring down Boxer. Just wait until Fiorina's ads start running exposing Boxer's complicity in the state's economic mess, including siding with the EPA in starving the Central Valley of water and causing mass economic calamity and unemployment in the agriculture sector of California. This hag has been a disaster for California and needs to go.

Just think what we conservatives could have accomplished had we nominated a Repub candidate with a measurable IQ?

At least Fiorina is our bimbo, not their bimbo.

I do not like Fiorina, however I want her to crush Boxer into the ground. As long as Boxer keeps defending her role in the barry ad min her numbers will fall.

I hope against hope that the scales will fall from the eyes of CA voters this fall and flip that old shrew out of her seat.

“as a wave of anti-incumbent sentiment sweeps the nation”

...the media bias continues: it’s not ANTI-INCUMBENT...it’s ANTI-DEMOCRAT!

I wish I could see some more internals of this poll. My fear is that Boxer might actually be losing the Moonbats. A win is a win for the GOP and I certainly hope its because California is moving to the right... but still, this is California so Boxer might actually not be liberal enough for some.

Anyone with more than a five minute memory, would understand what you’re saying, but most of the people I see are convinced Fiorina is a bright shining Conservative.

Oh boy, we may get to replace Boxer(D)...

...with Fiorina (Boxer)(R).

As a party, we Republicans have found the hammer to rebuild with, but unfortunately we keeping hitting ourselves in the head with it.

DeVore? Who needs him. We’re gonna WIN!!!!!!

Yep, another Leftist victory, just what the nation needs...

I don't think Fiorina would have gotten as far as she has in the world nor have the resume she has if she were an idiot. Certainly compared to Boxer she looks like Stephen Hawking. If you've heard Fiorina debate, she's actually quite sharp.

No one ever brings up Ma’am Hag’s role in the House Post Office scandal and her 500+ bad checks.

A thief besides all else.

Time to get past the primary and focus on defeating Boxer. Fiorina is a staunch economic conservative which is what the state and nation needs more of in the Senate. Let’s focus on the battle at hand and not battles of the past.

But the RINOs getting the boot confuses the issue even further.

I can explain it, though - it’s “anti-elitist”.

If you think you “know better”, you’re out.

I don't really care about Fiorina, I just love the idea of a leftist RAT incumbent like Boxer being thrown out of office in a leftist state like CA.

“At least Fiorina is our bimbo, not their bimbo.”

I remember when they took Janet Napolitano away from us in Az and put in Jan Brewer conservatives weren’t too happy with Jan back then.

Things can change:)

Wanting Boxer out is “delusional”?? Even if Fiorina is a RINO, throwing Boxer out is a triumph.

Speaking from the bowels of Hollywood let me say this to Fiorina:

"They will fix you. They fix everything. Come to the Dark Side.... Just turn to that old bimbo Boxer and say to her that "You've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?
