The New Black Panther Party also tried the same stunt in Jasper. TX, during the trial of the punks who dragged James Byrd to death. The New Black Panther Party and the Nazi/Klukkers got run out of town by the locals. The local jury also found the punks guilty and sent two to death row.
When Gore tried to use it against him in one of the debates, Bush basically said...2 death penalties and a life sentence...you can't punish them more than that. It was great.
Ironically, James Byrd's son is now an anti-death penalty activist, and is specifically opposed to the execution of his father's killers.
