Warning that tea party "mischief" may be aiding Democrats this election season, defeated Utah Republican U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett says that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid likely will keep his seat and that the GOP may not win hotly contested Senate seats in Colorado or Kentucky either.
Bennett, a three-term incumbent who lost his re-election chances when he failed to win his party nomination this year, made the comments in an interview with The Associated Press.
The Utah senator said he fears tea party extremism could end up costing the GOP seats that they otherwise would have been able to win.
He said he also worries that the GOP has no clear plan to govern if they take control of the Senate this election year.

I think that Bennett is correct in his concerning Reid winning. I also believe that if the Republicans have to win by being Democrat lites, the hell with it.

The dog in the manger speaks. Bennett can’t go graciously or respect the wishes of Utah voters who sent him to the Senate three times and his father there before him. Sure evidence that the state party convention did the right thing in telling him to retire to a career as a Washington lobbyist, where he can still hang out with his real friends across the aisle.

When Joe Schwarz lost in my district 4 years ago he accused Walberg of campaign finance violations (Schwarz was later fined for some of his own) then in 08 Schwarz endorsed the democrat. This year he made some noise about running an independant campaign for governor but I think he realized that he had pretty much killed any potential support with his past behavior.

Even if he were right, and he’s not, purposely saying things to divide the party to the press undermines his own point. He’s a Utah version of Charlie Crist, Lowell Weicker and Dede Scozzafava.
I’m certainly extra glad now that Bennett was so soundly defeated.
