Imagine that.

Being fired for teaching what the Bible teaches.

I’ll venture that if he taught what the Koran says about homosexuality he would have gotten a pass.

“I tried to show them that under utilitarianism, homosexual acts would not be considered immoral whereas under natural moral law they would,”

Actually, a strong utilitarian case against homosexual acts can also be made, based on the drastic negative consequences for both individuals who engage in those behaviors and society overall.

What was your average lifespan, again, "gays"? Under 50.

When this is over, he will be able to endow his own chair in the religion department.

I wonder if anyone in the legal action will make note of the fact that the professor was teaching “natural moral law” and the anonymous email complaint was in regards to “natural laws of man” (whatever that is).

No he won't. And, almost no one will do anything about it, including the Catholic church. The moral depravity in this nation has reached such a low point, my statement will be validated. It is almost time for the "finger of God" to act. When it does, a lot of folks are going to be in shock.

It would be interesting if the complainant had to describe *exactly* what behaviors he practices, and why he believes those acts must be considered natural and moral.

Maybe he'd like to demonstrate the differences for the court.

Like, is the unknown "informant" an expert in the matter or just blowing gas.

The courses at this institution should be geared to contribute to the public discourse and promote independent thought

HAHAHAHAHAHA! The hypocrisy is so thick you can't cut it with a chain saw!

One of the things that’s not mentioned is whether or not there was a change in command somewhere. My guess is they were looking for an excuse to do this.

I am appalled by this. He was fired for making a factual statement about what the Roman Catholic Church believes about a particular subject in a comparative religion class about the Roman Catholic Church.

I was thinking the same thing ... How does tolerating homosexuality promote "the greatest good for the greatest number?" It doesn't even promote moderate good for its chosen few!

They fired a Catholic for teaching Catholic beliefs in a Catholic class? Oh, that makes “total” sense.

” a student complained that Howell’s statements were “hate speech.”

....well then, that’s all it takes isn’t it?...one teenage kid who determines he doesn’t like what he hears and out comes the ‘hate speech’ card....and of course the school jumps thru hoops to satisfy the kid...how did queers ever get this kind of power?....and how much worse will it get in the future?

Let me just say that I think what the University did was wrong. But, for accuracy, to say this guy was fired is incorrect. Adjunct professors work on contract, one semester at a time. The University was just telling him that they would not pick up his contract again. One of the benefits of tenure is that it allows professors to say “controversial” things without being fired. In the past, this typically protected those on the Left side of the political spectrum. Now, it may protect those on the Right side.

I always knew that the people of IL were among the strongest opponents to “free speech,” particularly when it conflicts with their liberal religion.

You are right, the churches are either on the left or moving there fast. They do this, they mistakenly think, to get liberal members. But anyone knows that liberals don’t give much to churches. Ask Al Bore.

So, the professor was merely teaching what the Catholic church teaches, and some anonymous e-mailer (who wasn’t even taking the class) was offended to hear about it second-hand, calling it “Hate Speech”. LOL, teaching what a certain religion believes is Hate Speech?
