LOS ANGELES – A tough-talking, muscular Los Angeles police sergeant steadily rattled off tips to a young Marine riding shotgun as they raced in a patrol car to a drug bust: Be aware of your surroundings. Watch people's body language. Build rapport.
Marine Lt. Andrew Abbott, 23, took it all in as he peered out at the graffiti-covered buildings, knowing that the lessons he learned recently in one of the city's toughest neighborhoods could help him soon in the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
"People are the center of gravity and if you do everything you can to protect them, then they'll protect you," he said. "That's something true here and pretty much everywhere."
Abbott was among 70 Camp Pendleton Marines in a training exercise that aims to adapt the investigative techniques the LAPD has used for decades against violent street gangs to take on the Taliban more as a powerful drug-trafficking mob than an insurgency.

Funny how people think of the LAPD..there was an accident right in front of our studio a week ago here in Hollywood and the LAPD showed up 35 minutes after the accident.

Oh, brother! Are we supposed to be delighted that LA is being on par with fighting terrorists in Afghanistan? Does anyone see the tragedy in this? Nevermind perhaps some comedy. Wanna teach Marines how to train Afghan police to fight the Taliban? Take them to LA. There’s a terrific awfulness about that.
Anyone hurt after they showed up?
5 car pile up. Drunk driver. One woman yelled ‘where are the police..I’m hurt”.
Firetrucks showed up at the 20th minute and our building had medical staff. LAPD showed up and u could see in their faces they didn’t give a rat’s arse. Once you’ve seen the same sh*t daily..you get de-sensitized. Cant blame them.
Yeah. How many years of having the perp released on his own recognizance before the full arrest report is finished does it take before even the best of us would be just the teensiest bit jaded/cynical?

Well, if you greedy and selfish LA taxpayers would only pay higher taxes you’d get expedited police/fire response.

LAPD or Marines, there’s no helping the corrupt Afghans from their fate.

Probably the best we could manage is yo split the country up along ethnic lines and set them at each other’s throats.

A friend of mine is an ex Army Ranger who was one of the very first guys we had on the ground in Afghanistan back in '02. He says the reason we were so successful there at first is that we identified the resistance fighters to the incumbent Taliban regime and worked with them without stomping on their turf. A few months later the regulars came in with lots of reservists who are cops in their day jobs. He said in addition to generally being know-it-all a$$holes that the special ops professionals quickly grew to resent, these cop-type reservists generally didn't care about developing a relationship with the locals and instead tried to police them like they were policing the ghetto back at home. The result: kicking in doors, roughing up families while searching for a "suspect," and generally irritating the locals so they all hate us now and resent us just like they resented the Taliban.
I cannot imagine that bringing in LAPD will make this situation any better. America has a serious illness with its police culture and the way it does law enforcement in general. It's an illness here at home and it's a recipe for resentment if we export it abroad.
