Sarah PAC steps into the big leagues
Politico ^ | July 11, 2010 | Kenneth P. Vogel

Posted on 07/11/2010 7:14:49 PM PDT by Al B.

A new financial report filed Sunday evening showed Sarah Palin’s political action committee has taken its fundraising to a higher level – and suggests that she has begun building a more sophisticated political operation in place of a bare-bones organization powered mostly by her rock star status and scrappy on-line presence.

The report, filed with the Federal Election Commission, shows that Palin’s political action committee raised more money in the second quarter of this year – $866,000 – than it had in any previous three-month stretch since Palin formed the group in January 2009.

The committee, Sarah PAC, also spent nearly twice as much – $742,000 – as it had in any previous quarter, the lion’s share of which went to the type of list-building and fundraising (including its first major direct-mail campaign) that typically undergird top-tier political committees. It also reported its biggest-ever round of donations to candidates – $87,500 – and its highest outlays for travel costs, including $17,000 on private jet fare to crisscross the country for high-profile political speaking gigs, and speechwriting. It also showed continued payments for that speechwriting as well as foreign and domestic policy consulting, and its first ever payments to a scheduler.

In short, for the first time since the 2008 campaign when she was the vice-presidential running mate to GOP presidential candidate John McCain, Palin is supported by a political operation befitting someone considering a presidential run.

Palin endorsed Joe Miller (Lisa Murkowski’s opponent in the GOP primary) who is also backed by the Tea Party. Can you read? Do you have any idea what is happening outside of your block? Or do you just keep hearing this little voice that says, “Sarah Palin endorsed McCain?”

Good Evening Donna -

I presume it's Ankle Biter shift change and you are taking over.

Graham, Hatch and McCain all loaned Palin money to help get SarahPAC started, so the “contributions” were used to pay them back for the loans. I'm sorry, Ankle Biters don't like being confused by the facts.

I swear, I think you people hate Sarah Palin more than you hate Barack Obama.

“Essentially when we started last January, we started from scratch,” Crawford said. “We didn’t have a big base of people coming out of the presidential campaign. Everybody knew that there was this massive amount of support, but she didn’t have it, because all that stuff was property of the McCain campaign.

Just as I thought. He kept the donor lists and "I" didn't donate until after she was named VP.

That's why I still get mail from him. UGH.

Yes, to be clear, I like DeMint. It's the hypocritical arrogance of PDS that I dislike, and the above Rabs example that I gave is exhibit "A".

A lot of people did dumb things in the 2008 election cycle.

That's why I can't--in all fairness--count it against DeMint, just like I can't count the fact that Palin co-signed her name to a WSJ op-ed piece by McCain in which she promised to protect Americans against bailouts. (Then she did nothing while McCain suspended his campaign to attack conservatives and cheerlead for TARP in DC.)

Nor can I count against Palin her cheerleading for McCain during the 2008 election cycle.

You would do well to notice that my chief complaints about her include her endorsements of McCain and Fiorina; her PAC's questionable activity with regards to supporting Murkowski, Graham, and Hatch; her full-throated campaign for McCain that fairly blatantly transcended any notion of repaying a favor or mere loyalty; and her wishy-washy attitude towards unlawful immigration and the rule of law. All of these complaints are based on her actions after the 2008 election cycle was completed.

I've complained about those two endorsements too.

Yes, but as I pointed out to you the other day, a Palin supporter in 2012 will be able to say the same thing about Sarah and her support for McCain in the 2010 election cycle.

By that time, there won't be a dimes worth of difference between DeMint's poor endorsements and Palin's poor endorsements.

Think about it.

Sarah Palin tells 'tea party': It's revolution time

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Sarah Palin declared "America is ready for another revolution" and repeatedly assailed President Barack Obama on Saturday before adoring "tea party" activists, a seemingly natural constituency should she run for president.

"This movement is about the people," the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee said as the crowd roared. "Government is supposed to be working for the people."

Noting Democrats' recent electoral losses just a year after Obama was elected on promises of hope and change, she asked: "How's that hope-y, change-y stuff workin' out for you?"

Her audience waved flags and erupted in cheers during multiple standing ovations as Palin gave the keynote address at the first national convention of the "tea party" coalition, an anti-establishment grass-roots network motivated by anger over the growth of government, budget-busting spending and Obama's policies.

Filled with Palin's trademark folksy jokes, the speech amounted to a 45-minute pep talk for the coalition and promotion of its principles. The speech also was rife with criticism for Obama and Democrats who control Congress, but delivered with a light touch. But, aside from broad conservative principles like lower taxes and a strong national defense, it was short on her own policy ideas that typically indicate someone is seriously laying the ground work to run for the White House.

Indeed, Republican observers say she's seemingly done more lately to establish herself as a political celebrity focused on publicity rather than a political candidate focused on policy.

Catering to her crowd, Palin talked of limited government, strict adherence to the Constitution, and the "God-given right" of freedom. She said the "fresh, young and fragile" movement is the future of American politics because it's "a ground-up call to action" to both major political parties to change how they do business. "You've got both party machines running scared," she said.

Palin suggested that it should remain leaderless and cautioned against allowing the movement to be defined by any one person. "This is about the people" and "it's a lot bigger than any charismatic guy with a TelePrompTer," she said, jabbing at Obama.

"Let us not get bogged down in the small squabbles. Let us get caught up in the big ideas," she said, though offered few of her own.

The former Alaska governor, who resigned from office last summer before completing her first term, didn't indicate whether her political future would extend beyond cable news punditry and paid speeches to an actual presidential candidacy.

All she offered was a smile when a moderator asking her questions used the phrase "President Palin." That prompted most in the audience to stand up and chant "Run, Sarah, run!"

Re-elect President Palin in 2016!
Has a really nice ring to it - doesn't it?

Rabscuttle is a bigger hypocrite than you can possibly know. Just ask him who his employer is....

What's your point, VR?

I don't work for The White House, I don't work for any of the Democrats in Congress, I don't work for the DNC, I don't work for Soros, and I don't work for a foreign government.

Other than those exceptions, I see absolutely ZERO reason for you to continually bring up the nature of my employment, as I don't participate here in FR while on the clock, using corporate computing resources, while on company property, or in any capacity as an employee of the company I work for. [Well, actually, I take that first part back; there is one reason you might be continually bringing up the nature of my employment, namely that you are implicitly threatening me (with the public, i.e., as on FR, revealing of the identity of my employer and/or contacting my employer in an attempt to get them to terminate me) in order to silence me from expressing views of which you disapprove.]

In fact, I strongly believe that your continual bringing up of the nature of my employment is a direct violation of FR's "dos and don'ts" guidelines, specifically

Don't violate poster privacy - Don't reveal online another poster's phone number, address, or other information that the person hasn't already made public for everyone on Free Republic.

As this is NOT the first time you have brought up the subject of my employment, I am deeply disturbed that Jim Robinson and the Mods have in the past effectively turned a blind eye to the aforementioned conduct on your part. I have broken no forum rules, my comments and actions are fully in line with conservative and libertarian ideology (as my fellow FRiends will attest to), and I have done absolutely nothing that violates any law of the United States or of the various States.

BUT HE SAYS SHE’S PRO-AMNESTY

She went on live television and said that she supports McCain's position on immigration.

McCain's position on immigration has always been that of amnesty and voting rights for tens of millions of illegals.

As far as I could tell, Palin went on live television and basically said that she supports amnesty.

Or maybe she doesn't actually support amnesty, in which case she was lying on live television. Or maybe she has no clue what McCain supports, despite writing an op-ed for The Arizona Republic in which she claimed that she had been an admirer of McCain for years, and said what she said because she wanted to please the old damned RINO.

I think we’re on the same side. But there might be one difference: please consider the ‘Weaken McCain’ strategy.

Even if Hayworth loses, McCain is being dragged to the right, and this is good for Palin; it makes her support of McCain less stinky.

I’ve also locked horns with rabscuttle over Palin and ultimately agreed to disagree.

Despite that, rab has been doing some things right — excellent research on the AZ primary, exposing Grahamnesty, and outing other RINOs. That is also important for conservatism.

You have critical minded people and postiitive minded people. The key is to properly harness the energies of both in a well-timed manner.
