End of Census, and for Many, End of Job
By MICHAEL POWELL
PROVIDENCE, R.I. It was a finely honed machine, this United States Census team, and it had a good run. But in the coming days and weeks, many of its members will experience the pain of unemployment once again.
Christine Egan, a 31-year-old massage therapist, says her census job offered shelter from the economic storm last year. The economy was terrible; there was nothing, she says. Ive already gone through horrific, so Im immunized. She smiles, optimism almost extending to her eyes. It must be better now, right?
When the Census Bureau hired upward of 700,000 Americans over the last two years most in the last six months it landed more experienced workers with more sophisticated skills than any time in recent memory. This was the unintended upside of the nastiest recession of the last 70 years.

Now the true unemployment numbers will come out.
And IIRC, these jobs are not eligible for unemployment?
“unexpectedly”, “worse than anyone thought”, “all economits agree”, “it would have been much worse”...
” (jobless figure “unexpectedly” going up?) “
Ummmm....
Since Census jobs are overwhelmingly part-time, the laid-off workers won’t be eligible for UE benefits, unless they’ve changed the rules since the last time I had to deal with it...
Therefore, while hiring them took ‘em off the UE rolls, firing ‘em won’t put ‘em back on - a statistical win-win for everybody except the workers....
We have not been enumerated.
What should I do now?
Hey Chrisse,Al Gore is hiring!
My girlfriend only filled out the first couple of questions on her Census form. Yesterday, a Census worker came by to get answers to the rest of the questions. When she wouldn’t answer them, the worker went door to door asking her neighbors questions about my girlfriend.
The Census Worker was driving a Denali.
Did you send in a census form to their satisfaction back in April?
I didn't and the census taker dropped by my house to offer any help needed to finish the ten questions. (as if I needed help to figure out my race, I just didn't see any Constitutional mandate to give anything other than number of people in my house). I wasn't home at the time and I think they can only visit three times before giving up.
Me either. No visits, no calls, no mail. I did recieve a plastic bag with a form, but it was for a different address.....so I hand delivered it.
Obama deserves all the credit for thinking up this Census gig to create jobs. Just imagine if McCain had been President. No census.
I filled it out.....I put in the number of people living in the house, etc, among the mandatory Constitutionally required information. The rest, (Like race, income, driving habits, employment, etc,) I wrote in “NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS”. or, “NOT CONSTITUTIONALLY REQUIRED TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION”.
We have not heard from them since.
Great.. it’s finally over and my 2 people 1 male 1 female and American got by without the idiots coming to my house this time !!!
This happened to my Mom, the census person asked her about her next door neighbor. She refused to answer.
How is asking your neighbor (or anyone else) legal? Pure Third Reich-style thuggery.
Far worse than the unemployment numbers is the manipulation the WH will begin to inflict upon the census data in order to accomplish his goals of maximizing minority impact in the political spectrum. Never fear—the numbers of minorities will be skyrocketing and given the honesty we’ve already read about with regard to these census workers (who made up their own census forms in order to avoid having to knock on doors), we’ll be shocked to learn that blacks and Hispanics now represent 75% of our population!
Is that part truly over, or will there still be a few follow ups for the die hard hide outs?
“We have not been enumerated.”
Oh, jeez! Now your village/town/city is going to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars from Obama’s stash. Planners are going to goof up on where to locate hospitals, highways and all manner of municipal services in your area. You may even lose your member of Congress if Census incorrectly concludes your area has less population than it really does.
I hope you can find a way to sleep at night, and if I were you, I sure wouldn’t confess to my neighbors how you gave them the shaft.
