Gov. Martin O'Malley offered tepid backing Monday for the Obama administration's lawsuit against Arizona's controversial new immigration law. Former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., meanwhile, was eager to talk about an issue likely to energize his supporters.
"It's a fascinating scenario here," said Ehrlich, a Republican who is trying to win back the job he lost to the Democratic O'Malley four years ago. "Everybody acknowledges the federal government's failure to do one of its primary jobs, which is protect our borders. A state takes action. And then the federal government sues the state. It's a shame it has gotten to this point."...
The debate enlivened the annual meeting over the weekend of the National Governors Association, where O'Malley was selected to lead a panel on homeland security with Republican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, and where O'Malley reportedly expressed apprehension over the lawsuit behind closed doors. Several Democratic governors voiced concern about the political impact of the potentially unpopular lawsuit during what already is expected to be a difficult election year for their party...
But on Monday, O'Malley said President Barack Obama had little choice.
"The president had to act because of events that he did not put into motion," he said after a labor rally campaign event in Annapolis. "I think when he does that, I think that we should respect that this is a matter of principle for him and that he's acting based on his principles."...
O'Malley's less-than-full-throated endorsement of the Justice Department lawsuit could reflect fear among Democrats that illegal immigration, a subject that arouses Republican bases, could distract voters from the subject Democrats would prefer to discuss this year: job creation....
A June Rasmussen poll showed that 66 percent of Maryland voters support the Arizona law....

Obama had little choice, indeed.
O’Malley is scared. His whole political dreams are about to go up in smoke. He is trying to play both ends. If he clearly supports Obama and the Justice department, he clearly risks re-election.
Job creation? Do the Democrats *really* want to go there?
66% of Maryland support it yet stinking RINOs in FL are wimps. And why did very good Ken Cuccinelli in VA wimp out on this. GOP needs to go on offense.
The Democrats want to discuss job creation because the are under the illusion that there actually have been jobs created.
I did not know that Cuccinelli had decided to wimp out on the immigration thing. When did that happen? Do you by any chance have a link?

Oh this is rich - I live in MD.
O'Malley was elected in 2006 with the support of Thomas Perez [yes, THAT Thomas Perez of New Black Panther non-pursuit fame] who was head of Casa de Maryland at the time. He promised Perez that he would work for immigration reform.
But, most of the people in MD support the AZ law. So, O'Malley is now trying to do the old side-step shuffle ...
It makes my head hurt to think of the caliber — or lack thereof — of the people in the BO administration. America-haters, grafters, parasites on the body politic. Thomas Perez should be in prison. O’Malley needs to be drawn into a trap on this issue. And then the trap needs to be sprung.
Hopefully, he’ll be Citizen O’Malley by the end of the year.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
The Virginians already got rid of a large part of their problem in Prince William county...and they all crossed the river into Maryland. Home of two sanctuary cities- oh, joy.
I see you share my fondness [sarc]for Tom ‘I never met an illegal that I didn’t want to make a voter with freebies’ Perez.
The only thing I can thing of is at least by pulling him into the DOJ, Maryland may...may, have a chance to clear out the illegal enabling enrichers who lined their own pockets while spouting their nonsense.
Good job by VA. I hope VA treies for an AZ law. Ken cuccinelli should do it.

I’m both impressed and envious of VA leadership...sigh.
Will Maryland ever get it’s act together?
After reading ‘Freak State’ pings, it gives me hope when I find others who are sick and tired of the crap that has gone on in the State.
