Witnesses recall gun in police shooting at Costco
Las Vegas Review ^ | Jul. 12, 2010 | By LAWRENCE MOWER AND BRIAN HAYNES

Erik Scott, who was described by Las Vegas police as "kind of going berserk" before he was fatally shot by officers in front of a Costco store on Saturday, did not appear out of control to one witness who saw the man interacting with store employees.

In a news release issued Monday, police said Scott, 39, was "acting erratically" and "damaging merchandise" while inside the store in Summerlin. He also was seen with a pistol on him, police said. Police were called to the store about the incident, which ended with Scott's death. Shots were fired by three officers, including one who was involved in a fatal shooting in 2006.

There is multiple versions of the story, police and public, and none of them match.

I’m reserving judgment until I see Costco security camera footage both in the store prior to police arrival and outside when the police shot him.

I won’t even trust any “independent” findings on this one, I want to see the tapes for myself.

“That’s it... That’s the gun that did it.” [pointing at the gun].

The Costco store, at 801 S. Pavilion Center Circle, has video surveillance cameras. It wasn't clear whether the cameras captured the event. Calls to Costco's corporate spokesman were not returned Monday.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie said Monday that investigators have been trying to obtain the video: "We have not recovered any video at this point."

There was a camera covering the area where Scott was shot - and the police haven't recovered the video? Soros told them to bury it, because Costco was going to be held responsible.

Something missing from earlier threads on this— is the culpability of whoever called in to 911. It sounds like they made it sound like the guy was brandishing his gun, going nuts and shooting up the place.

Not that it relieves the cops of their bad decisions to shoot (it doesn’t) but it does make a huge difference depending on what they had been told was happening inside. Whoever (wrongly) claimed that this guy was an active and immediate threat is the one that set up the situation.

The next bad call was by the cops to demand that the guy drop his weapon, which meant he had to first draw it from wherever he carried it. He might have known better and just gotten down, kept his hands in sight and told the cops where it was, but under sudden stress it’s hard to think clearly.

I note too that all three cops were relatively junior. One had five years in, but the other two only had a year or two. It was possibly the first time they’d ever actually confronted an armed person.

A hysterical employee, an inexperience (and/or poor training)... and what should’ve been a nothing event turns deadly in a split second.

This was included in the story:

“If I give you a command to drop the weapon”

So, the police are ADMITTING that they told him to “drop the weapon.” So, when he reached into his pack to retrieve the gun - he was doing EXACTLY what the police were ordering him to!

Case close. Police at fault - 100%.

One of the three cops was involved in a shooting in 2006, I believe.

If ever confronted by shouting police, fall face forward in the pushup position, spread your hands far and wide and DO NOT MOVE. They still might shoot you dead. But at least the evidence will convict them later. And you make a smaller target prone.

he saw Scott reach with his right hand and pull out what appeared to be a gun in a zippered holster

So the gun was inside a zippered holster when they shot him?

The police reports all match, almost as if they collaborated.

Actually, it’s not known what a Costco employee said or didn’t say. I have a feeling the cops are trying to twist it to put themselves in the best light. There’s a certain Las Vegas police captain named Patrick Neville who’s made some rather wacky statements about the guy “kind of going berserk” and claiming he actually pointed the gun at the cops. It sounds like an innocent man who had no idea what was going on was gunned down by 3 poorly trained overzealous cops.

What you describe are excellent reasons why
COPS GONE WILD!

We who carry, regardless of how law-abiding we are, are fair game for execution by such cops after those cops are incited to rash actions by hysterical people calling 911 about a guy with a gun.
