(Reuters) - Five percent of the population of Key West, Florida -- more than 1,000 people -- have been infected at some point with the dengue virus, government researchers reported on Tuesday.

Most probably did not even know it, but the findings show the sometimes deadly infection is making its way north into the United States, the researchers said.

Gee, I wonder where this came from, considering it's the first outbreak in 75 years. Oh, look, maybe this had something to do with it...

"Dengue was eradicated in the United States in the 1940s but a few locally acquired U.S. cases have been confirmed along the Texas-Mexico border since the 1980s. More cases have been reported recently in Mexico and the Caribbean."

Surprise, surprise - in my best Jim Nabors .

Another gift from globalism. Dengue is nasty stuff. It’s also called bone break fever, you hurt so bad you pray for death.

"Dengue was eradicated in the United States in the 1940s"

I'm thinking that DDT may have helped with that. Oh well. Can't do that again.

“Dengue is nasty stuff. It’s also called bone break fever, you hurt so bad you pray for death.”

Dengue is not uncommon here in the Philippines.
I know a few westerners that have had it, and one child.
It last about a week and does require treatment.
I have not heard of any unusually bad pain from it, but the blood gets very thick.

Oh come on,
Obama’s wife say’s if you judge people who have a communicable disease then you are a racist....
Let’s be fair, people from the jungle should not be the only one’s to die from a disease that was wiped out in the United States of America.
Until these rats took over...

The fatality numbers go way up if you have a recurrence. My data is old, may be better treatment now.

Way off topic but coincidentally I used the Jim Nabors surprise thing on a 30 year old today. Had no idea who Jim Nabors was let alone Gomer Pyle.

The report states that they are having a hard time trying to come up with a vaccine. I also see that they have tested people with an active virus or antibodies to the virus........why can’t they make a vaccine from the antibodies of the people who have already had it?

....just wondering.

"Had no idea who Jim Nabors was let alone Gomer Pyle."

I retired from military service last year - after 25 years. Near the end, no one under the age of 30 had a damn clue what I was talking about. To them, I may have just as well slipped into ancient Greek when speaking to them.

If you want to be depressed, walk up to a any 20-year old, and ask them who was President before Bill Clinton. You'll get sick.

Working on a cure?
Who are they kidding. There haven’t been any cures since polio. All they are interested in is treating symptoms with maintenance drugs. There’s no money in cures, just symptomatic relief.

I'm not a physician, so there's a BIG chance I'm wrong, but I don't believe that they actually "cured" polio. They just developed a vaccine that eradicated it by stopping the transmission of the disease. But, the people who were afflicted prior to the vaccine, continued to suffer. Although, I do believe the palliative treatments for the disease did improve.

a 19 YO girl of my aquaintence used the word “daddy-o with respect to me in a text message. I texted back: “Daddy-o? Who are you, Fonzie”? She texted back: Who’s Fonzi”.
