There was a plan to use real names on the WoW forums. A person who posted his real name to show how it is OK to do so and in a couple of hours people dug up all kinds of personal stuff about him and posted it to the forum. It was really kind of funny.
Blizzard Backs Off: WoW Gamers Will Stay Anonymous
Dozens of WoW players demonstrated the Internets capability in finding someone immediately when Bashiok, a Blizzard employee, shared his full, real name possibly in an attempt to set an example for those who were against the entire solution. Revealing himself to be Micah Whipple, Mr. Whipple faced tremendous outcry that spanned quite a few pages in one of the forum threads. Many users showed Micah his own personal information including his photos, address, telephone number and other such things by providing links to his Facebook and websites that offered to show Mr. Whipples full address for just $2.95″.

Works out just fine for a police state. Everybody would clam up, and the Chicoms (or any imitators) would have undisputed control of all political discussions on the Internet.

Was only joking anyway. But I do think while China wanted to do this, they saw it happening with WoW (or not as it turns out) and decided now was the time to do it.
