1. Due to Heller and McDonald the ACLU no longer has any cover to pretend the 2nd Ammendment doesn't exist, and will now defend it in court.
2. This is a deliberate attempt by the organization hierarchy to confuse people and appear even-handed to increase membership.
3. This is the action of a local chapter that is out of step with the national leadership.

I don’t trust the aclu’s motives at all!
I think number one might be more in line with what’s happened here. The New York office must be frothing at the mouth. I called them years ago to ask about a gun case. The person on the phone said the ACLU did not believe that the second amendment protected an individual right. Now it seems they can’t use that one anymore.
The repercussions of McDonald just got interesting.
