My forbears did the same, plus there was the rationing and the wage freeze from WWII. The traps and firearms were passed down.

Want to see something scary? Inform the kids that they'll have to live on WWII rations for a few months. For example, their entire month's ration of canned, dried, or frozen food would be used up if they bought, for example, just two cans of pineapple (click pic for more info)...

Here's an authorization for to request permission to purchase a refrigerator:

Today's kids have no clue.

Its far more than one verse:

The prudent see danger and take refuge,
but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
Proverbs 27:12

“Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come,
and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet, and
took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.
But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not
warned; if the sword come, and take [any] person from among them, he is taken away in his
iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.” Ezekiel 33:4

In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has. Proverbs 21:20

Shall I go on?

Neither do I. Good for small game and deer.

I prefer the DRT option though. Hunt with 45-70 or .54 Hawken (flint lock). Very rarely do I have to chase wounded game. Tend to go for neck shots too. A CNS hit always does the job.

On that note. A bow/cross bow is even better. Kills the critter without the BIG BOOM.

On another note. “Black Rifles” tend to be looked upon as survivalist/militia guns. Carrying around something else is not as provocative. I have had people look at me funny when I carry and M-4 (simi only) but not bat an eye with an M-1.

Yikes! I just posted on the gardening thread that I’m glad my son knows that food comes from the ground and meat comes from animals. How many people know how to plant gardens? I’m placing an order for heirloom seeds next week. I used normal seeds this year, as in years past, but I think it’s time to plan ahead there as well. Scary stuff, but my son will have food.

...thanks for the post Red in Blue PA....besides things already mentioned, my list includes:

1.other armed people...no way my wife and I can survive alone on our isolated farm...we’ll need at least 10 others minimum to pull pickett guard duty 24/7/365...and make no mistake, the biker gangs will definately be coming to murder, rape and take all you own.

2.commo...picket guards at the observation post have to be able to give warning when the looters are coming....so that everyone in the compound can go to their assigned battle stations at once...also a single sideband hand crank SW radio to get news of the outside world.

3.medical....anti-biotics and dental instruments for pulling teeth

4.an old 4x4 vehicle...I say old because I want something with plugs and points....the new ones are too complicated to keep running...a stash of stabilized fuel to go with it.

Two over-riding principles for all planning and preparation:

“Murphy’s Law” - Know it, live it...

“KISS” - plan, but don’t over-plan — always err on the side of flexibility....

Exactly. If nothing else, pets will provide a little needed levity in a crisis. Those of us who are attached to our pets understand. Even if they're nothing more than my two parrots (for whom I've laid in a year's supply of seeds and pellets, and am continually adding to), they're part of the family. Any slimebag who wants to make soup out of my little buddies will suffer horribly for it.

Much more complicated and more wasteful.

When you heat wood, it releases combustible gases.
You can filter those gases and direct them into a gasoline engine with very little modifications (carb replaced with gas system). You can run a car on wood gas and many in the nordic countries did it during WWII. Some still do (as a hobby).

A steam engine requires that you burn the wood to make steam, and capture the steam to drive the generator. The heat loss and the amount of wood/coal that would have to be burned is prohibitive. You couldn’t chop enough wood. Not to mention building a steam engine.

Now, if you were sitting on top of coal deposits, it might be a good idea.

But not enough to keep the still running.

Note: this is legal in Tennessee. In small quantities:(

Another thing I’ve thought about is obtaining food without detection.

Do a YouTube search on "sling bow", and turn your wrist rocket or standard slingshot into a survival tool to hunt, fish, or defend with very little noise. Real cheap, real effective.

Another FReeper suggested giving "expired" looters to your local hog farm. Maybe you could trade for a couple pounds of bacon or something.

The looters are more likely to be bugs and rodents than anything else.

The chance of anything resembling chaos are almost almost nil. The most likely scenario is a localized Katrina type event. If there is a mass chaos type event, they’ll be killing each other instead of raiding farms. It’s easier to just roam town and raid pantries for a year or two.

One of my biggest problems will be that I am on a well and can’t store a great quantity of gas for the generator to run the well. In a real emergency the generator will be run for just minutes while water containers are refilled. But when the gas runs out, more will have to be obtained<<<<<<<<<<<

Have you considered getting a generator that runs on propane? You can store large quantities of propane for a long long time.

Everyone needs to be prepared, but hunkering down?

I’m kinda of the mindset........Why run and hide?

I want my country back!!! If we all hide, guess what?

They’ll take us all.....one at a time, right where your hiding.

I have stated this on many posts for the past several months and have never received a single reply.

See my tagline. I bought 5 of these so that when my neighbors come for my drinking water, they can just sit their butts down and help me make more. They work great.

Another thing I’ve thought about is obtaining food without detection. If I fire my rifle to kill an animal, the sound will bring attention to myself. I think I might add a simple fishing rod to my survival stores.

Get a composite bow or crossbow. They don't make noise, and when firing at a target like a big styrofoam board in front of a pile of hay the ammo doesn't get damaged. So you can practice a lot for very little money. And with all that practice you can take out rabbits, squirrels, raccoons and even dear. If you are out in open country having a weapon where you can make your own ammo is a big advantage. And crossbow bolts are easy.
