In 1985 I was looking for a job and a friend arranged an appointment for me with an EPA office in Denver. When I arrived, I sat outside the office, as a conversation was going on inside, and I did not want to intrude. I could not help but overhear the conversation, which was centered on ways to return a mine to natural condition.

In a few minutes, one of the participants in the conversation left, and I was ushered in to the office. As a freshly minted owner of an MS degree, I though I might make a couple of points by making a suggestion that I had considered when I inadvertently overheard their discussion. I said that I had overheard what was said, and that I had an idea that might save them considerable money if implemented.

The EPA representative stopped me at the point. In a clear and proud voice, he intoned “At the EPA, WE are not concerned with cost.”

At that point, I was sure that I did not want to work for the EPA.
