If you'd claimed two years ago that Obama was going to do everything he's done, you would have been called a paranoid nutjob.

Isn't that what we all WERE called two years ago when we tried to tell people how dangerous this rabble rousing demagogue was? Yes we were.

You have done nothing but invent a fiction that presents an “apples and oranges” wide distinction between the case at hand and your fictional case. The conditions, the applicable laws and the types of actions taken are not similar at all, nor germane (relevant) to each other.

Just how far can/will this administration go to silence their critics?

Unease over US role on net control Australian IT

MORE than 1000 internet experts have gathered in Athens for the first UN-sponsored internet governance forum, amid grumbling over the dominant position of the US.

This is a renewed effort of a failed attempt last year to silence truth tellers, wrestle control of the internet away from a free speech America (where there is no control, thank Gd) and shut down the last vestige of free, unfettered opinion worldwide. The internet is the worst thing that ever happened to despots and dictators everywhere.

Ok, except it says wordpress.com. So why would it be something different?

From the story, it appears that there are quite a few different services that offer wordpress-based blogs. The shutdown only affected one of them, albeit apparently a rather large one.

Perhaps this was a selective shut down of blogs violating the ToS?

Supposedly it's a crackdown on copyright infringement, but come on. I can't believe that every one of those 73,000 blogs had material posted on them that infringes on someone's copyright.

And, as I said upthread, what on earth does Joe F'n Biden care about copyright infringement activity? Why is the Vice President of the United States all of a sudden so damned interested in cracking down on abuse of intellectual property on the internet?

Let that thought sink in for a moment.

I don't know, but we probably won't get results like this out of it...

It’s blogs clearly violating copyright laws.
Thing is, that should take a warrant to suspend them and a court verdict to shut them down.
The veneer looks good, but it’s fast moving dry rot underneath.

It is important to understand that there are two different flavors of Wordpress.

1 - the free hosted service (like Blogger) based on the Wordpress platform.

2 - the full-featured Wordpress open source software.

The first piece is directly managed and affiliated with Wordpress. The latter is freely distributed and may be installed on any server or website address.

This story relates to one incidence of the latter version - not an action against Wordpress. This is an action against a major Wordpress user/account reseller/host.

Ok. How does that relate to whether or not this is a despotic overreach by government?

It's hard not to think that, but we still need to keep our cool until we see some corroborating reports, and more details.

I'll agree that it's hair-raising, though.

After reading the article, it looks like these sites were offering full-run movies for free or for charge, that they didn't own.

I cannot get too worked up about that.

The title freaked me out though. =:^o

U.S. Authorities Shut Down WordPress Host With 73,000 Blogs

“After the U.S. Government took action against several sites connected to movie streaming recently, nerves are jangling over the possibility that this is just the beginning of a wider crackdown. Now it appears that a free blogging platform has been taken down by its hosting provider on orders from the U.S. authorities on grounds of “a history of abuse”. More than 73,000 blogs are out of action as a result.”

Authorities Force 73,000 Blogs Offline?

from the that-doesn’t-seem-right dept

TorrentFreak is reporting that a company, Blogetery, that hosted about 73,000 blogs, has been shut down by US authorities. Details are, admittedly, sketchy at this point, but the entire site has been taken down, and the company’s ISP claims that they had to terminate the account immediately due to the “request of law enforcement officials, due to material hosted on the server.” The ISP also claimed:
“this was not a typical case, in which suspension and notification would be the norm. This was a critical matter brought to our attention by law enforcement officials. We had to immediately remove the server.”

I read the article too, but I haven't yet seen confirmation that 73,000 blogs, all routed to the same server, were all distributing movies (etc.) illegally.

That sounds very unlikely to me.

If it's a copyright issue, I don't have a problem. People have the right to profit from their intellectual or artistic property.

Free Republic could disappear for the same reason. We need a P2P version of Free Republic with encryption and anonymous relay servers.

Excerpt from: http://www.helium.com/items/1893892-why-73000-wordpress-blogs-were-shut-down-by-the-us-government

by Bruce Tyson

Recently targeted by federal action, the free WordPress blogging site Blogetery abruptly came offline after hosting provider BurstNet complied with undisclosed demands from authorities. A message viewable upon visiting the Blogetery site gives this message from its owner: “After being BurstNet customer for 7 months our server was terminated without any notification or explanation.” A link on the site leads to a forum called Web Hosting Talk, where the site operator has posted correspondence with BurstNet, that suggests feederal involvement in the incident.

Those first to learn about the Blogetery shutdown seemed to think that the move was due to intellectual property concerns. The online discussion supposedly with the Blogetery owner suggests that users of his site prompted frequent cease and desist demands from copyright holders to which he responded with appropriate action against users of his site.

Original speculation seemed to be misguided upon the release of comments from BurstNet that disclosed that the action against Blogetery was not “typical” and required instant compliance with federal demands to close the entire Web site. Some reports seem to suggest that intellectual property rights actions typically target specific users of a service rather than the entire operation. Now, some fear that the suffering of the innocent together with the guilty as the free speech of many appears to have been infringed by government action. Such fear supposes, of course, that not all 73,000 blogs on Blogetery were lawbreakers. Some consider the magnitude of the federal action as an indication that the Blogetery site itself and its owner may have been involved in some type of wrongdoing.

BurstNet and authorities have been mum on specific details of the case, saying only that they have refunded the payments from the Web site owner owner.

Please start a new thread with this article. I believe it will get a LOT of responses.

For instance, what if Tea Party members all started changing their Facebook profile "face" picture to the Gadsden flag? Would they cancel all the memberships? Would they ban the flag outright and face the repercussions?

I'd like to see them try to shut the Tea Partiers up... Yep, I'd sure like to see that.

After reading mor stories today, I believe the authorities physically removed the physical server containing the bn.Blogetery.com hosted blogs.

To protect the copyright claims of major RIAA donors, the Obama administration just stole, blackholed and civil forfeiture confiscated the intellectual property of about 72,000 websites.

War is Peace. DMCA IP law is liberty.

Well then they are being consistent. Some years ago, I had an employee who was involved with a group of people providing movies via Bit Torrent. The movie industry and the feds got concerned when these guys got their hands on the latest Star Wars movie, before release in theaters.

The FBI raided his apartment. He was not there, as he was out of town on a training course. However, they seized his computer which was being used as a server. The problem was that the server was government property. Without permission, he had taken the server home to configure it for Linux. Before he did that, he decided to transfer all of his home computer files to the government machine and clean up his own drive. We fired the employee, and bought the government a new server. We weren’t happy.

Our now former employee was convicted along with his fellow conspirators and spent time in federal prison. He was just a kid, and had no idea what he was getting into. He learned a hard lesson.

Over a year later, the FBI called and told us that we could pick up the server. The guy I sent to pick it up asked the agent if he had wiped the drive. He got a nasty response but was assured that all illegal materials had been removed. When we got the server back to the office, we found all the movies still intact.

"Blog it instead..."

Gunny, I've thought of starting a blog. Anyone who notices me around this place knows that I can dump thousands of words on any topic that cranks me up.

But - what keeps me from doing it, is that there are hundreds and hundreds of thousands of blogs out there. Why would anyone read mine, as opposed to another?

I suppose that promotion is the key. Done the right way, I know that more and more eyeballs will show up read at any site.

But, a successful blogger also has to have something that makes people come back for more, and refer their friends to the site. There are an awful lot of incredible writers blogging today. I read at some of their sites and think to myself that I could never equal the work they're doing.

Perhaps I'm looking at the glass half empty. I dunno. Lots of folks have suggested blogging to me, but I have yet to take the leap.

There is speculation on some of the industry forums that is wasn’t a cut and dry case of “copyright infringement” it was more likely kiddie porn that was being served up.

More than likely the owner nor the hosting company was aware that this was going on.

The servers have been taken as evidence and we all know that it could take a long time before they get their forensic studies done on the servers. Until then, the (potentially)poor cat that owned that site will not know what is going on until they press charges on him or give the hosting company back their servers months from now.

So, I guess what I am saying, unless someone can authoritatively tell us different, this was not a hit job by Obama’s minions.

I don’t look forward to the changes we will have to live with in the near future and longer term future brought on buy the FRAUD in the Whitehouse, but I also don’t like to jump to knee jerk assumptions.

“FBI Warning of Al Qaeda Hit Lists, Bomb-Making Tips Led to Shutdown of Blogging Site”
Published July 19, 2010 | FoxNews.com

SNIPPET: “A popular website that hosted more than 70,000 bloggers was shut down suddenly last week after the FBI informed its chief technology officer that the site contained hit lists, bomb-making documents and links to Al Qaeda materials, it was reported on Monday.

When the WordPress platform Blogetery.com went dead, the initial explanation from the site’s host, Burst.net, was that “a law-enforcement agency” had ordered it to shut down, citing a “history of abuse.” The explanation caused a wave of conspiracy theories in the blogosphere.

But according to a report on CNET Monday, Burst.net shut down Blogetery.com when it became spooked by a letter from the FBI, in which the bureau detailed the presence of terrorist materials among the blog posts.”
