You guys know anyone in this area? I was talking to someone in the airport a week ago who was heading to either Adak or Attu, hope they’re alright!
My step-grandaughter is staying with her father for the summer down on Kodiac island, no news from them, more than likely they are not bothered with it at all, what people don’t really understand is that Alaska has the geography for many many earthquakes daily, its whats called “new land” and its constantly moving.
And Alaska is basically nothing but rock, in some areas there is the remains of alluvial glacier silt a hundred or more feet thick, a very fine sand almost like cement powder, the famous 1964 Good Friday quake in the Turnagain Heights area of Anchorage developed massive fissures and many houses collapsed due to the liquification of such silt under them, same as Mexico City because it was a filled in lake, same with SF in its recent quakes where the most damage was in the district that ironically was built upon the debris of the 1906 quake.
Where I live about 11 miles up north sorta from Wasilla its mostly rock, I have very little topsoil actually and I feel very safe, there is honestly a fault line right on my property even still yet, I had a 5.0 two weeks ago here, it bumped the house a bit, lasted like 3 seconds. Nothing fell down, nobody running out in the streets in a panic.
So in summary its the type of ground under you that a person should be aware of, anything thats been built upon an old lake, garbage dump, glacier silt plain and such is the most dangerous place to be. Having solid rock is safer, it will still shake but it won’t liquefy and crevasse, other than a massive tectonic plate subduction I don’t worry at all about an earthquake for the most part and since I’m inland nor from a tsunami.
I think I will watch 2012 again on my widescreen again tonight...
Is that worth watching? I'm so digusted by the typical apocalyptic disaster flicks that I haven't even looked at the trailers on this one. Funny thing, too, since I love the disaster shows on History and NG.
Its interesting, the special effects will blow you away, its like a super grade B saturday afternoon movie flick. One of those films that you do actually like to watch over and over just because of the visuals.
I waited for it to come out on Bluray and I have seen it at least three times, more so than Avatar.

Now the earthquake map shows another quake, unknown size yet, 9 miles NW of Coopers Landing on the Kenai about 4:30p.
See those red fault lines that run right above Palmer? One of them is right behind my house about half a mile. LOL!

Boy, it sure has.....this is where I go whenever I feel a quake, or hear of one.
