Capito mulls options (WV decision coming soon)
The Martinsburg Journal ^ | July 18, 2010 | John McVey

Possibly by the middle of the week and definitely by the end of the week is when U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., will announce if she intends to run for West Virginia's vacant U.S. Senate seat.

"The law hasn't been changed yet, so there is no decision to be made now," she said Saturday at the Berkeley County Republican Club's Reagan Picnic at Poor House Farm Park, where she was the featured speaker.

State legislators continued to meet in special session Saturday to change the succession law to fill the late Robert C. Byrd's unexpired term, which runs through 2012. Byrd, a Democrat, was the longest serving member of the U.S. Congress. He died June 28 at the age of 92.

West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant initially said that an election to fill the vacancy could not be held until the general election in 2012.

However, West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw said the governor has the authority to set a special election to fill the vacancy.

Manchin called legislators into special session on Thursday to work on a bill that would allow for party primaries and a vote during the general election in November to pick a replacement for Byrd.

"I've gotten a lot of encouragement to run (for the U.S. Senate) and a lot of encouragement to stay in the House," Capito said. "I'm not getting pressured by the (GOP) leadership to stay in the House. They know I'm independent, and this is a unique state. They're letting me make up my own mind."

Capito is hesitant to run against Joe Machim, who’ll almost certainly be the DemocRAT nominee. However, she’s the only Republican who seems to have any chance at all.

Capito might lose to Manchin and lose her congressional seat too.

That is a lot to ask.

That’s very true. At the same time, if she almost wins, she could be a very viable candidate for Governor in 2012.

She should stay in the House. Machim is a sure winner if he runs. She might have a better chance challenging Rockefeller when he comes up for reelection.

I think Manchins appointment of Carte Goodwin has hurt him some, because it was so obviously done to pave the way for Manchin. Goodwin is only 36, has never held political office, and has been little more than a minor political hack to various prominent democrats. The reaction of 98% of West Virginians to the appointment was, "Who?!?". That is how unknown Goodwin was, outside of the Manchin administration. Even some of the political reporters on the local news, confessed to not knowing who he was.

Manchin obviously wanted somebody loyal who would not decide to run themselves, but that wasn't enough for him. He went farther and appointed somebody that didn't stand a snowballs chance even if they "betrayed him" and decided to run. It made Manchin look petty and political.

I hope she runs.

I hope she loses badly.

Here is why.

Next year, the Dems who totally control both state chambers, by very large margins, will redraw the 3 congressional districts into 1. Likely putting Charleston into the 3rd, and taking the northern portion into the 1st, thus eliminating her seat anyway.

So at best she is a one termer remaining.

She is also pro choice, and supports amnesty and bailouts and is pretty much a Christie Todd Whitman type.

So, if she runs, against Manchin, she’s done and gone.

We don’t really loose a seat or a vote long term, but we do get rid of a RINO.

And open up the races for real conservatives in WV.

Run Shelly Run!!

The democrats did nothing to hurt her when they redrew the lines the last time. Doubt they would this time. With no changes in the number of seats there is usually minimal change in the drawing of the districts.

I don’t love her but better her than another boot licking democrat in the Senate. Namely Manchin, his appointment of his toady confirms he will run. Manchin would kneel before Zod (Obama and the next rat Senate leader).

See this thread http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2555456/posts

looks like she can run for both her house seat and the Senate seat.
