Delta Expects 65,000 Applicants... For 1,000 New Jobs (When job creation makes economy look bad)

It's clearly a good time to be hiring people, if you're a company.

Yes, this is job creation, but it's as if it just makes the economic situation look even uglier:

Bloomberg:

Delta Air Lines Inc., the world’s largest carrier, said it anticipates getting about 65,000 applications for its 1,000 airport job openings as millions of Americans continue to look for work.

The airline is hiring workers at its 25 biggest U.S. airports to help with planes that are flying with near-record percentages of seats filled and cope with weather disruptions, Chief Executive Officer Richard Anderson said today in a weekly recorded message to employees.

The company often gets “many multiples” of applications when it has job openings, he said. Delta has about 81,000 employees and previously said it plans to hire about 240 pilots.

It's hard to see how Delta's applicants will have much bargaining power when accepting their new positions.

I flew them recently and will not again. Stewardesses had an attitude like O Town. Atlanta airport is another reason to avoid plus Delta pimping for CNN and NBC on their inflight TV. No thanks.

These are jobs that require no particular skills, other than a modicum of intelligence and the ability to cooperate in a work environment. There are many people unemployed right now who fit this description.

For those who don’t know, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the Busiest airport in the WORLD ( yes, the WORLD ).

It has :

* Largest number of passengers annually. (1998–present)

* Most arrivals and departures (operations) annually. (1999–2000, 2005–present).

* In 2007, Hartsfield again set the world’s record for most aircraft movements in one year with 994,346.

Not to mention the large amounts of overqualified people looking for any work.

This is similar to the eighties when Reagan was trying to correct the Carter years. Real estate was booming and then the Democrat Congress changed the accounting rules and we had an S&L crisis and a real estate collapse. It was very similar to today’s real estate collapse but for a slightly different reason.

Each available job had thousands of applicants. There were several times when I was told something like there were 2,200 applications which they narrowed down to 20 and then to 3 and that should be proud that came in no. 2. I would say, hooray, how much does no. 2 pay? You know the answer to that.

FROM THE WALL STREET JOURNAL:

Two years after U.S. airlines were pounded by soaring fuel prices followed by the recession, the industry appears poised to post its first meaningful profit since 2007's third quarter.

The major U.S. carriers will begin reporting second-quarter results next week, led by Delta Air Lines Inc. on Monday. Analysts expect all but one of the nine largest carriers—AMR Corp.'s American Airlines—to be in the black for the quarter and all of 2010, thanks to moderate fuel prices, an improving U.S. economy, fewer seats on offer and increased revenue from checked luggage and other optional services.

Forgive my ignorance, but when did Delta become the worlds largest carrier?
Can anyone enlighten me?

Northwest Airlines was acquired by Delta on October 29, 2008 to form the world’s largest airline. After approval of the merger, Northwest continued to operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta until December 31, 2009 when both carriers’ operating certificates were merged (the Delta certificate survived).

Delta completed the acquisition of Northwest on January 31, 2010 when their reservation systems/websites were combined, officially retiring the Northwest Airlines name and brand.

Sorry about your bad experience. I love Delta! I go to Europe and to the West Coast a lot, and their flights are very reliable...they’ve actually upgraded some of their coach seating, they still give you free wine on your way to Europe, most of the staff has been pleasant and helpful (there are always some rotten apples in any barrel), and in general I like them.

The only problem now is that they have consolidated flights after the Northwest merger, and sometimes it’s hard to get a seat on certain long-haul routes.

They won't. When unemployment is up employers hold all the cards.

“I flew them recently and will not again.”

But Frantzie, Phil Mickelsen flies Delta and likes it cause he can carry his meager, occasional winnings in First Class.

Phil owns his own personal Gulfstream or owns it through fractional ownership. He averages around $50 million a year so I doubt he is too concerned. BTW - Phil won the Masters this year. Took his kids to the donut shop the next day versus Tiger taking the pnacake waitress to a church parking lot to have sex.

Phil also came very close to winning it last year along with the US Open. His wife has been sick both years.

Phil gave Tiger quite a beat down at the end of 2009 at Shanghai too. Tiger was spray shots into the water - 2 on the last two holes. Tigre was also throwing clubs and swearing at The Open again this year.

“Phil owns his own personal Gulfstream..”

Does he fly in the wake of Tiger’s plane?
