WATERVILLE, Maine — Few politicians can surpass Maine's Republican candidate for governor when it comes to the school of hard knocks. Paul LePage was 11 when he ran away to escape an abusive father. He hustled on the streets of Lewiston, shining shoes, selling newspapers and begging before being taken in by two families. He eventually managed to go to college and even earned an MBA from the University of Maine. He's getting used to defying the odds. LePage, Waterville's mayor, defeated six other Republicans to win a spot on the November ballot with Democratic Senate President Libby Mitchell and three independents. University of Maine political science professor Mark Brewer says LePage's backstory will help with an electorate that idealizes the idea of "rugged individualism."

Lepage has been mayor of Waterville for six years. He's reduced taxes each year; and works with an all democrat city council. A true conservative, grassroots candidate who was outspent by candidates backed by by both Snowe and Collins. Check him out. I highly reccomend the 5 min. interview on his website. http://www.lepage2010.com/

It being Maine, he probably doesn’t want, cause he’d be hurt by, Palin’s public support. Otherwise, he’d be a perfect candidate for her.

Does Palin check with the person she endorses beforehand, whether they welcome her public support?

Street hustler from Lewiston. Kind of redundant isn’t it?

"Street hustler from Lewiston. Kind of redundant isn’t it?"

Not exactly the same thing!

There is a difference between

shining shoes, selling newspapers and begging before being taken in by two families which is what LePage did at the age of 11.

and

yelling, cursing at and harassing ordinary folks while trying to seal their lunch money which is what a community organizer like Barak Obama did at age 26.

Maine is a very poor rural state with a population of aroun 1 million people.state. It has a very small (1%) Black population, and a very small 1.3% Hispanic population.

We are not amused. Your sarcasm is not appreciated.

My family has deep roots in Maine. Six generations of my family have gone to college in Maine, and we know the state very well.

Olympia Snowe IIRC was fostered in one or two different families in the Lewiston area.

Look what kind of mess she turned out to be. Doesnt know what she stands for.

LePage seems to be made of sterner stuff.

I am voting for him

I am voting against Snowe even if it is a Dem. Might as well have a real dem rather than a fake one.
