The Passing of a Climate Warrior
New York Times ^ | 19July2010 | Revkin (another climate "warrior")

Posted on 07/19/2010 11:29:40 AM PDT by palmer

Stephen H. Schneider, a Stanford University climate scientist who for decades built the case that global warming, while laden with complexity, justified an aggressive response, has died. Ralph Cicerone, the president of the National Academy of Sciences, of which Schneider was a longtime member, said he had confirmed the news.

Schneider, who was 65, spent decades studying the forces influencing climate and the policy implications of human-driven warming, as well as pressing the case for action to curb emissions of greenhouse gases even as he battled and subdued a rare cancer in recent years. In an e-mail message to a group of contacts, his wife, Terry Root, a biologist at Stanford, said it appeared that he died of a heart attack today as a flight he was on was landing in London.

Should not speak ill of the dead, so I'll use his words instead

"To capture the public imagination, we have to offer up some scary scenarios, make simplified dramatic statements and little mention of any doubts one might have. Each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective, and being honest."

I say we honor this charlatan by giving effigies of him a traditional Viking funeral.

He died too young. He was one of my professors when I was a graduate student, and even then he was more of a political activist than a scientist. Global cooling was his quest then and from his position at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) he was using their new CRAY super computer to help build one of the first global circulation models. He used graduate students to help him feed data grist into the mill. I’m sure that some of my half-a$$ed algorithms are still being used today by his and others GCM’s. That was the start of my skepticism with the AGW movement and it has remained strong to this day.

He was at the right place at the right time with his computer skills and rode that to the heights. Too bad he never spent much time doing real research. May he rest in peace.

Here's a very fitting tribute to Schneider by the late John Daly, whose own death was cheered by climate warrior Phil Jones in a climategate email.

http://www.john-daly.com/schneidr.htm Well worth reading the whole article.

Well spotted, palmer. Schneider has written his own epitaph, championing politics over scientific truth.

Poor guy now faces one heckuva postmortem dilemma. Does he go with cremation and have the bigger carbon footprint now or get planted in the ground where he’ll eventually turn into the evil fossil fuel, thereby contributing to our continued reliance on it. What to do? What to do?

Third option: "resomation" where the carcass is tossed in a silk bag and put into a strong alkaline solution that dissolves most everything leaving a fine mineral ash behind. The dissolved solution is flushed out into the sewers. The "ash" is returned to the family for disposition.

I looked up one of his first papers on the topic:

From the abstract:
One difficulty in predicting climate change is the large degree of cancellation that occurs between many of the climatic feedback mechanisms. Considerable discussion is included of the applications of theories of baroclinic disturbances to the Parameterization of eddy heat fluxes

That parameterization still hasn’t been done correctly (actually modeling people outside of the GWT crowd argue it can’t be done correctly).

And we see this:
The dependence of the above factors on temperature and hence even the direction of possible climatic feedback between cloudiness and surface temperature is not yet clear and remains to be determined through further observational and modeling studies that include the effects of microphysical, dynamic, hydrological, and radiative processes.

The ability to model clouds is STILL where GWT falls apart.

What's the proper response to the passing of someone who you cannot stand or someone who has been doing real harm? I felt the same way when Teddy Kennedy passed. I don't want to celebrate because it's wrong and against my religion. Although in the case of someone like Hitler, Stalin, or Mao that would have been difficult. But all I can say is this man caused immense damage (as did Teddy) and I'm glad he's no longer in a position to cause any more damage.

So RIP, that's the best I can do.

Should not speak ill of the dead

Why not?

The guy was a fake, and a fraud, and a liar ... and he abused science to push an anti-human political agenda.

I fart in his general direction.

His cronies and conspirators will eulogize him ... they cannot go unanswered.

"Each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective, and being honest."

Which comment automatically removes him from the ranks of real scientists into the ranks of propagandists. A sad testimony at the end of his life.

they cannot go unanswered.

I have to agree although I prefer to argue the specifics of why Schneider was wrong about catastrophic AGW. But you are right, the media will be all over this like Al Gore over a... whatever, and once the eulogies are done they will bury the story and all the politicization of science that Schneider engaged in.

I feel sorry for this man and his family, but that does not diminish his arrogance in pushing personal opinion as "science."

No true scientist would destroy the civilized economy of the entire world based on ( fraudulent )computer models or a gut feeling...

How timely for you to have FReepmailed out this article about Schenider from the current Stanford Magazine. Facing the Heat Climatologist Stephen Schneider calls for cooler heads as temperatures, and tempers, rise.

he died of a heart attack today as a flight he was on was landing in London.

One might think that a good global warmer would go while walking, riding a bike or teleconferencing, but no, he was burning as much carbon as he could when he passed on.

Why is it that those claiming to be most concerned about global warming have the largest carbon footprint as they demand that we cut back our miserly energy use?

Which Cray was it at NCAR? (Cray-1, -2, X-MP, Y-MP, C90, or one of their SMP/MPP machines?)

Cheers!
