If youre like me and Ed Driscoll, youre the sort who would think that if we were going to spend almost a trillion dollars that we dont actually have on a stimulus program then wed at least spend it on infrastructure. Well, more accurately, youre sort who hopes that wed spend it on infrastructure, because if youre like me and Ed Driscoll youd be well aware that once the Beltway Establishment gets a hold of an idea it mutates into a horrific, expensive mess.
Let me put this situation into perspective for you.
* There was 1.25 billion dollars in stimulus money to connect the cities of Orlando (59% Obama) and Tampa Bay (53% Obama) with a high-speed rail line. * But there was no money to keep the roads paved in Stutsman County, ND (56% McCain). * There was 3.4 million dollars in stimulus money to create an eco-passage for turtles in [Leon] [corrected - ML] County, Florida (62% Obama). * But there was no money to keep the roads paved in Coshocton County, OH (53% McCain). * There was 6.5 billion dollars in stimulus money to bribe Sen Arlen Specter (D) of Pennsylvania (55% Obama) * But there was no money to keep the roads paved in Alabama (60% McCain).
Funny how that works out, isnt it? - the way that them that has, got, I mean. Youd almost be ready to believe that some of this stimulus money was distributed with a look at the 2008 election returns.
But thats just crazy talk.

Do you really think money would be withheld from clearly red states like Oklahoma?
Well, not the potholes directly over the streets and highways and byways. But, the millions of little pot holes on the sides of the roads. They come in pairs, and they fill each pair with an official stimulus sign.
I seen dozens of those ‘stimulus signs’ go up all over town recently, but for the life of me I have no frik’n clue what ‘projects’ their talking about. To me it just looks like they’re throwing up signs in random places in an attempt to convince the public that the stimulus is being used ‘wisely’. This is in liberal, progressive Austin BTW.
This is nothing new for Dems. LBJ once closed an active and necessary Air Force Base just because the district voted for Goldwater...........
So far at the project that is near my place of work in Memphis, TN, they have erected the signs and covered over all the drains on an already flood-prone road.
Well, I haven’t seen stimulus signs set up to take credit, but the semi-country road I travel every day has had a lot of repaving done (and needs plenty more). NC has an extremely variable record for road maintenance, but I’m personally glad to see what I’m seeing at the moment.
Now, if they could just make I-95 not a death-trap...
you should see the shiny new freeway system that the stimulus has brought to Chicago...
Just to give you an idea of how much of a waste it was ... the town I live in has a goal of redeveloping it's downtown over the next decade.. their DREAM goal is to have 1 billion in construction occur there over the next 10 years to completely rebuild it... 1 billion, to completely rebuild the downtown of a city of 100,000+ people.
The stimulus package was something like 800+ billion...
so....
That means the stimulus was enough money to rebuild 800 of Americas downtown's to a DREAM level.
Meanwhile the current stimulus hasn't even patched a pot hole that I can see.
I drive through a small town in northern MA once and a while. The stimulus signs are everywhere - just looked it up, they got a $1Million dollar grant for sidewalks and sapling trees.
The town boasts 3,000 residents - I barely see anyone using the pretty concrete sidewalks. Aargh!
I live in the desert. The highway next to my home got some stimulus money (I saw the sign). Apparently it was to put black topsoil and grass seed on the sides of the road beyond the shoulder. As expected, the topsoil blew off, no grass grew because it is a desert, and the exposed land eventually went back to sand. What was the point?
Paint an Obama symbol over every pothole.
