The final meltdown of Mel Gibson has come at a convenient time for Catholic-baiters in the media. The guy threatens violence against women, he’s a racist and he’s a CATHOLIC! Here’s Lucy Mangan in The Guardian, stooping almost as low as Gibson:
Received wisdom is that Gibson cannot recover from this. But one course is still open to him. If ever priesthood beckoned a man, it is surely now. At least he apparently saves his violence for adult females.
And if you don’t understand that last dig, let me point you to Times columnist Caitlin Moran, who explained on Thursday that the Catholic Church “f**** kids”.
The slurs against Catholics being put about liberal journalists aren’t far removed from Protocols territory, if you ask me. But dragging Gibson into this rancid rhetoric doesn’t work, for a simple reason.
He’s not a Catholic.
In fact, Mel Gibson is in some respects the opposite of a Catholic, since one of the themes of his fake Catholicism is that the Pope isn’t the Pope. Admittedly, Mel’s own theology tends to morph like a shape-shifting lizard, depending on how hung over he is, but in so far as he’s anything he’s a sedevacantist like his father, Hutton Gibson.
Sedevacantists regard the Second Vatican Council as so obviously evil that it must have been the work of Satan, and therefore the Pope who called it and his successors aren’t really Popes. Gibson Senior once reportedly described John Paul II as “Garrulous Karolus the Koran kisser” and has put about the notion that the last real Pope was secretly elected at the 1958 conclave but forced to resign in favour of anti-pope John XIII. But then old man Gibson never met a conspiracy theory he didn’t like; hence his well-documented Holocaust and 9/11 revisionism.

Thank you NY’er.
People really need to spend some time in the bizarro world of the sedevanticists.
They have webpages and forums.
People really need to read the rantings of Hutton Gibson.
The Gibsons are not catholics.
and if he didn't have such a huge ego, he might have figured out that the only reason his ex-girlfriend pretended to be into him was $$$$

IIRC sedevacantist =”Vacant seat”, the idea being that there isn’t a proper Pope.
I can’t help feeling sorry for Mel, and I hope he gets sorted out. He may not be a Catholic, but the Left has hated him like a nova since “The Passion”.
He is being sifted, we should pray for him.
Listening to the tapes, it is clear that Mel is in trouble. He needs our prayers (like you stated) and not our scorn and gossip.
Mel Gibson is a Muslim..
LOL!
I do feel for Mel. He's obviously losing the spiritual war within his own soul. I pray he will turn to Christ and receive the mercy and grace he needs to get on track.
Oh my... I’ve been trying to explain this to people even when he was a family man on better behaviour who produced the Passion of the Christ. People don’t care-their only care is to neutralize his life-changing movie by dismissing it as right wing, homophobic “Catholic” propaganda.
Mel certainly has given them a lot of ammo in this regard. His has been such a pathetic fall, it’s hard to attribut it just to Hollywood. I think the devil so hated this movie (and the many souls it saved) that he set out to crush and humiliate poor Mel by temptation of his primary weaknesses: addiction, lust and pride.
Yep, he's nutso. The apple clearly didn't fall from that tree, as both men battle demons within.
I've heard Mel referred to the past two-three weeks as conservative, very conservative, Catholic, very Catholic and Republican. I think it's clear he's none of those things.
God knows what’s in Mel Gibson’s heart; we don’t. None of us even know him personally, so how much less can we assess the degree of his faith, which is something only God can know? He may be in grave error about certain things, but there have been times in his life when he was sincerely and urgently seeking the Lord. I believe he has been attacked by Satan, particularly since the Passion of the Christ, which was such a stunning work of evangelism for Christians of all types. He needs help, both from a psychiatrist and a priest; let’s all just agree in prayer that he gets such help.
“The Gibsons are not catholics.”
When I got saved by grace through faith, I also was set free of the whole “pope” question, once and for all.
That is, I think the papists AND the “empty-seat” papists are both out to lunch.
Jesus is the head of His church. Simple.
Mel displays all the classic symptoms of Biploar type I. In a 2008 documentary, Acting Class of 1977, he first talked about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
The title of this article made me laugh out loud. I couldn’t really explain to the kiddos why it was so funny.
Poor Mel. His dad is SOOOO nuts, Mel never really had a chance.
What non-Catholics say about the Church is of no concern to me. Our Church was founded by the apostle Peter, under the aegis of God. Mere words, from humans, will never remotely contend with God's will.
What does bother me is the habit of many Catholics have of denying that we had, and have, bad members in our Church.
Mel Gibson may be exhibiting unsavory behavior, yet he does not do so in order to harm the Church.
At the other end of the spectrum, sexual predators masquerading as priests, nuns, or pious laics, are using their positions to harm the Church.
We cannot mend ourselves until we admit we are broken.
Who is worse? Gibson or Peter, who thrice turned is back on Jesus?
Mel is a human. He’s done good things and bad things— like humans do. The only reason we’re talking about him is that he’s a movie star.
In my opinion, Mel has mental difficulties— maybe he’s bipolar, maybe it’s something else. He’s clearly the son of his father.
Mel, I’m sorry that you can’t shut up and go away. A) You don’t have the ability to shut up. B) The media will not let you go away.
I’m not taking the bait to get into a doctrinal debate.
The point being - the MSM is trying to hang the “catholic” tag on Mel - and thereby attribute part of his “problem” with his catholicism.
Mel is not a catholic.
And I’ll go further - if you took the time to converse with some of these people? sedevanticists - SSPX?
Well, let’s just say it’ll go far in explaining some of Mel’s comments about jews.
I think there may be something to the idea that "artistic temperaments" have a difficult time in dealing with the real world. You have guys like Michelangelo, who scarcely cared for human company; preferring his studio and his marble. Beethoven was rude and short-tempered and drove his own nephew to attempt suicide. Van Gogh had fits in which he lost control of himself. Gibson may be cut from the same type of cloth.
He makes the late Bobby Fischer seem sane, by comparison.
Mel is beginning to look alot like Soupy Sales....the same as Mick Jagger is morphing into looking alot like Don KNotts....And Paul McCartney is morphing into looking alot like a pigeon....
Mel Gibson is not a catholic.
He isn’t a “bad” member of the Church.
He isn’t a member of the Church at all.
That’s what happens when you belong to a schism.
You repudiate your membership.
Of course he is a catholic..once a catholic always a catholic (heard that somewhere :)
He never “was” a catholic either.
He was born into the Church of Hutton.
I remember seeing an article earlier on FR that if you were once baptised as a Catholic, it holds for life, no matter what. There were many comments agreeing with it, as well.
You saw that thread too?
Baptism is a sacrament cannot be “undone”.
It’s not just a catholic thing - a person cannot be “unbaptized” yes.
The catholic church recognized many baptisms outside of the church.
That Mel was baptized catholic prior to vatican II - does not make him a catholic now, just like any catholic who leaves the church for whatever reason.
Listen guys, my opinion is explaining the truth to Democratic liberals is like trying to describe a typewriter to a monkey. Why bother!
Now the devil has him in his grip.
When one gets in the battle, one is attacked by all sorts of Demons which encourage your fleshly desires and sins.
Mel got in the battle long ago and needs prayers for a greater harder fall so he can be done with all the things in his life that allow him to sin out this way.
No excuses for his behavior, nor am I minimizing his part in his downfall. Just saying he’s being pruned an a big, public way.
If the libs are going to bash Catholics they should have a field day with the Catholics who are transporting drugs and illegals over the border each day.
“if you took the time to converse with some of these people? sedevanticists - SSPX?”
Yes, I do converse with “some of these people”.....
They’re in my family, and I love them very much!!!
This is true. Great examples of Catholics are the Kennedys.
SSPX? in you family? really?
Notice anything funny about their attitude towards the pope?
jewish people?
Should you ever doubt the depravity of the “Hollywood” mentality, compare the pride with which these people defended CONVICTED child rapist Roman Polanski to the castigation of ALLEGED girlfriend slapper Mel Gibson.
I pray for him and his family more than anything else. I will not throw stones.
The flesh and spirit are always at odds and pride is a killer.
Through free will he made a choice to leave his family...
He’s suffering the consequences of said choice.
In agreement.
C.S. Lewis wrote that a snail can’t be very good or very bad; a dog, being more intelligent and capable, can be both better and worse than a snail; a man can be better and worse yet. A man who has a deep capacity for faith also has a great capacity for wickedness. Conversely, when brilliant people who have been wicked like this turn around, they can become great servants of Christ.
As an Orthodox Christian, I find the sedvacantist Latins a very curious (and unpleasant) group. If you inquire of their opinion of us Orthodox, why, they’ll tell you we’re schismatics and rail against us like the most extreme ultramontanists, but at the same time they argue for an ecclesiological position vis-a-vis the Popes of Rome rather like ours, though we think there hasn’t been a proper (Orthodox) Pope of Rome since 1009.
Amen.
I feel sorry for the man -- I truly believe that he has inherited the same physiologic/psychological condition his father has. His critics have no interest in that, only what they can gain from using his behaviors to fuel their own prejudices and agitprop.
>>Mel Gibson is a Catholic.<<
A Roman Catholic?
Nope, sorry. He isn’t.
He is part of an independent Catholic Church. They are not the same kind of “Catholic” as I am. They don’t believe in B16. I do and I suspect you do too.
>>I believe he has been attacked by Satan, particularly since the Passion of the Christ, <<
I believe it as well.
>>Theyre in my family, and I love them very much!!!<<
That explains googobs about your disdain for Catholics.
And verbal child abuser Alex Baldwin.
And those who will post comments here, saying the tapes were fakes, or that she deserved the trashing he gave her. Spare us. A man who slugs a woman is no man at all, and I don't care if she is despicable. And if the tapes are fake, Prove it. The preponderance of the evidence seems to be on her side.
Mel is beginning to look alot like Soupy Sales
