MEMPHIS In the city where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, a once-unbeatable former mayor wants the Democratic congressional primary to be a referendum on race.
Willie Herenton is accusing white two-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen of trying to act black. He tells voters in this majority-black city that they need to come off that Cohen plantation and get on the Herenton freedom train.
But President Barack Obama has endorsed Cohen, who has an A rating from the NAACP and has built support in the black community by supporting civil rights legislation and bringing much-needed federal funding to Memphis schools and hospitals.
It appears that the former mayor is making race the basis of his campaign, but I dont think voters are going to go for that at all, Cohen said. President Obamas election proves that voters dont look at race when making a decision in an election.

Hell, Horton is so crooked he makes Rangel look like a saint. And Horton will get 98% of the black vote because he is black.

Yes, but the question is weather it has reached the tipping point? I want the entire leadership in Congress changed. Of course me wanting it won’t make it happen but I’m trying to help. Right know I think I would settle for some good old grid lock.

bringing much-needed federal funding to Memphis schools and hospitals. Which is to say that WE are paying to buy votes for him. If he wants to buy votes, let him spend his own money.

The mayor is right. Cohen is a black-wannabe. Cohen, as we say in Yiddish, is a putz and a schmuck, but I’m being redundant.
Cohen sold out his soul for politics a long time ago.

This race for the Memphis congressional seat is comical and pathetic. Watching Cohen and "Hump" Harrington trying to out (sic) negro each other is something to watch nightly.
