LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Authorities in Las Cruces say someone stole a gun and a Taser out of a Dona Ana County Sheriff's car at the Mesilla Valley Mall.

According to investigators, an off-duty sheriff's sergeant had his marked vehicle parked at the mall when someone broke the front window before taking off with a gun, ammunition, a Taser, and handcuffs.

When questioned why the sergeant took all his equipment to the mall, investigators say he was just obeying the rules.

"Yes, he was off-duty; however, he was on-duty so far as being on call which required him to have his uniforms, his equipment, and his vehicle there, ready to be able to respond," said Bo Nevarez of the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office.

The burglary happened earlier in July; the equipment was valued at about $4,000.

This is a good reason not to frequent establishmnets that ban weapons. They are a good place for theives to break into vehicles to obtain such items.

The Cincinnati police just started a "put your junk in the trunk" campaign;citizen are advised to place any items that would be attractive to thieves in the trunk of their car when leaving the car parked unattended.

It is a little inconvenient, but better than tempting some low-life.

For what’s left out of $4000, you can buy 9000 rounds of .40cal ammo. Nobody could carry that singlehandedly.

I saw an estimate from another source at $3,000. Perhaps they are considering the damage to the car. In this era of high labor costs, that could easily be $2,000.

For what’s left out of $4000, you can buy 9000 rounds of .40cal ammo. Nobody could carry that singlehandedly.

.45 caliber M1911 ball ammo comes packed in the military M2A1 ammo can also used for .50 caliber MG ammo, and often called *.50 cans*, 1000 rounds to the can, two cans per case.

Given that .40 S&W is a bit smaller than .45, I reckon that somewhere between 1200 and 1400 rounds of .40 could be so packed in the military cans, but a thousand rounds per can is a real handy figure to work with: 9000 rounds would be 9 cans full. The GI issue backpack frame used to man-carry a full 5-gallon water or fuel can can also be used to hump ammo; four cans is a pretty good load but is veryt do-able, and I've done it. Two more cand can be carried off the right side,n and another pair on the left, admittedly a pretty good load, but for a grunt in good shape, it's no big deal. That leaves one final can's worth, or 20 bozes of ammo. What won't go in ammo pouches or pockets can be carefully balanced on trhe helmet, and anything remaining can be juggled, entertaining and impressing spectators and bystanders along the way.

That may be impractical for cops, however. After all, with one's hands so occupied, there'd be no way to carry doughnuts.

I'm just glad it's not 9K of rifle ammo that needs moved. That could be rather tiring.

Stolen, or “reacquired” (at taxpayer expense)?

But, interestingly enough that mall does NOT have “conspicuously posted” signs stating that guns are prohibited ON EVERY ENTRANCE as is required by law of all commercial places which, as a matter of policy, ban guns from their premises... maybe I should ‘violate’ there little rule and counter-sue. ;)
