WASHINGTON (AFP) A top US lawmaker on Monday blasted the source of a huge cache of leaked military documents on the Afghan war and said such leakers belong in the "orange jump suits" of jailed criminals.
"It is shocking that any American, much less someone in the Pentagon, would betray his country and possibly put our soldiers at risk by leaking information on the ongoing war in Afghanistan," said the senior Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Kit Bond.
"The damage to our national security caused by leaks like this won't stop until we see more perpetrators in orange jump suits," Bond said in a statement.
Another senior US lawmaker, House Armed Services Committee chairman Ike Skelton, warned against judging Pakistan's role in the Afghan war by "outdated reports" from the vast disclosure.
"Some of these documents implicate Pakistan in aiding the Taliban and fueling the insurgency in Afghanistan," Skelton, a Democrat, said ..
"It is critical that we not use outdated reports to paint a picture of the cooperation of Pakistan in our efforts in Afghanistan," he stressed, adding that Pakistan had "significantly stepped up its fight against the Taliban."
"While we still have concerns about Pakistan's efforts against the Afghan Taliban, there is no doubt that there have been significant improvements in its overall effort," said Skelton.
Skelton also slammed the whistleblowing website Wikileaks for "recklessness" in making public the roughly 92,000 military files and field reports, billed as perhaps the largest leak in US military history.
"Our nation's secrets are classified for a reason, ..
At the same time, Skelton said the "troubling" documents seemed to support his criticism of the war effort since it began in late 2001, but insisted US President Barack Obama's troop "surge," announced in December 2009, would right the faltering campaign.

Rush noted that it was kinda weird that what was leaked was only up to the time O took office... Makes you think, hmmmmmm?
Each and every one of these leakers needs to hard time in Ft. Leavenworth.
I believe the man responsible is in custody in Kuwait - he needs to die in prison

“The Robin Hood of Hacking” or just on a mission of enabling “transparency”.
We have been begging for this. A 21 year old Army Intel soldiers was apparently able to access every single TS document and even burn them into a CD. Now that’s security.
Where’s Sandy Berger when you need him?
I think they should drop him in the middle of the Korengal Valley.
This is the logical result of not pursuing leakers, including these people who “comment on condition of anonymity,” because they are not authorized to talk.
Since they risked the lives of combat soldiers in Afghanistan they need to gain first hand experience about the need to keep secrets secret.
I STRONGLY recommend an extended, 18-month, tour in country with no R & R time.
Plus, their actions need to be “leaked” to the troops just like they “leaked” information.
I haven't decided on providing an bright orange suit of battle uniforms; but the temptation is there.
I say shoot the treasonous bastids and be done with it.
Ike Skelton is up from his nap...
IF this had happened under Truman or Eisenhower- they would already be in jail somewhere secret.
They all belong in jail- the person(s) who stole the info & the persons who published it all.
Yup, start sending people to Fort Leavenworth if they’re in government service of any kind.
Prison is to good for these traitorous scum. A firing squad is what they deserve.
I saw something on these leaks earlier talking about “war crimes committed during the Bush administration.” I can’t remember the source. I think this $hit has the 0bama administrations fingerprints all over it. I”ll bet we’ll see a sham indictment of Bush on “war crimes” as an October surprise. This will gin up 0bama’s base, they’ve been wanting this for years.
I like it!
