[Texas:]Legislators facing battle over immigration

AUSTIN — When Texas House Speaker Joe Straus recently invited a group of Gillespie County Republicans to ask him anything they'd like, the most passionate questions didn't focus on a huge, looming budget shortfall, worries over education or high insurance rates. Instead, fired-up “patriots” wanted action on an Arizona-style, get-tough immigration law in Texas.

The Alamo Heights Republican's answer was less than satisfying for the conservatives.

“We have to be realistic about legal immigration,” Straus said, noting that it's good to have a supply of young, willing workers.

Grass-roots activists, angry about illegal immigration, are unlikely to settle for such moderation when the Legislature convenes in six months.

Some lawmakers worry that a push from a vociferous segment of the GOP for a legislative crackdown ensures a toxic session. While lawmakers already will face daunting challenges in maintaining crucial state services, many GOP members say they have no choice: Illegal immigration remains a federal responsibility, but growing concerns about the subject make it a line-in-the-sand issue for some Republicans.

For them, this country has become “a lawless land” without leaders.

“It is just so frustrating for those of us who were born here and for those who have come through the system and are upholding their end of the deal,” said Fredericksburg businesswoman Angela Smith, a leader of Patriots of Gillespie County who attended the GOP meeting. “It's so important because our country was built on the rule of law. Those who would laugh it off or say that this is a far-right idea are not in the mainstream.”

Legislators including Reps. Leo Berman, R-Tyler, and Debbie Riddle, R-Tomball, have said they'll file Arizona-type immigration bills for the legislative session, which opens in January.

That effort would guarantee the need for multiple special sessions and prompt Democrats to consider parliamentary....

Brilliant point that I, for one, had let slip my mind.

“Maybe the Dems will run off to OK and NM again?”

That would work for me. The difference this time would to make sure that they stay there.

“patriots” in quotes.

Naw, no “journalism” bias there.

But illegal aliens, lawbreakers from the get-go? Why, they’re “undocumented” aliens or “workers”

If they do...Perry should declare they have abandoned their posts and appoint replacements.

That should snare things up for quite some time!

What would be nice is to "guide" the illegals toward one state at a time. They overwhelm all the freebie services, piss off the citizens, the state legislature emulates Arizona.

Lather...rinse...repeat...

“We have to be realistic about legal immigration,” Straus said, noting that it's good to have a supply of young, willing workers.

This is the crux of it. Here we have an elected official who doesn't understand that the rest of us do not want to continue to pay taxes to subsidize someone else's cheap labor, young and willing though it may be. The costs of illegals -- their medical care, turning our schools upside down to educate their young, countless other costs -- are not being born by the people who benefit from having cheap employees. Those costs are being born by the rest of us, and we are not happy. It is, in effect, a transfer of wealth from us to them. That realization is a large part of what is happening in Arizona. It is an embarrassing disgrace that Joe Straus hasn't figured it out.

No such law will pass in Texas, not under this governor.

Spot on. And the fact that Gov. Perry has repeatedly stated that "Some aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected alien, taking them away from their existing law enforcement duties, which are critical to keeping citizens safe."

So, keeping (American) citizens safe from illegals isn't an issue???

.... “If the Legislature were to choose an Arizona-style path to go down, then I do believe that the emotions will run very high,” he said.

I seem to recall some once famous fighting words hombre, "bring it on!". I already see that I'm going to be spending some time down in Austin visiting with some recalcitrant legislators this next session. I plan on showing how uncomfortable it can get when they are not 100% on board with citizen voters who are angry!

How is having young, willing, ILLEGAL workers take jobs from both young and old Americans who were born here or came here legally a GOOD thing, you Hispandering RINO?

Some aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected

I suppose that it is some how different than turning them into medical officials during a lawful contact,,,DWI.

or different than turning them into physiatrists during a lawful contact,,, mentally unstable.

different than turning them into FBI agents during a lawful contact,,,bank robber.

different than turning them into marriage councilors during a lawful contact,,,domestic dispute.

.

Not to mention that with illegals gone, there would be less crime in all these instances, including rapes, home invasions, child molestation and then there are the gang members.

Um, the 20% or so of real unemployed or underemployed Americans might beg to differ.

While I agree somewhat, I think we could well get enough momentum to force the RINO to sign it.
