CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Alejandro Umana flashed gang signs on his way inside the federal courthouse for sentencing Tuesday morning.
Umana, an MS-13 gang member, was convicted on multiple counts of murder of this year.
He was a leader, he was sent in by the leadership in El Salvador to come to Charlotte and surrounding areas to help organize the gang, says Sam Nazzaro, a prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice.
In April, Umana was convicted of murdering two brothers in a Guilford County restaurant. That same jury convicted him of two other murders in Los Angeles, California. The jury recommended the death penalty.
This is the harshest penalty that we have in the criminal justice system, says Jill Rose, an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Charlotte. Certainly we know the MS-13 members were watching this closely, hopefully it sends the message it needs to send.
When Umana walked into court he didnt show any remorse. He actually smiled and said hola to the crowd, which means hello in Spanish.
Prosecutors hope the message is that no one in the gang, including the leadership, is untouchable. But in this culture, experts say that Umanas street cred just went up with the conviction.
Umanas attorneys declined to comment as they left the courthouse but they indicated that they will appeal.
The 25-year-old becomes the first MS-13 gang member in the country to receive a federal death sentence.
Even during sentencing he continued his defiance with a statement to the court. He said, This is the destiny God has given me, as for the rest, la mara salvtrucha which means MS-13.

Alejandro Umana
An unrepentant MS-13 gang member was sentenced to death Tuesday for the murders of two brothers -- only the second killer a federal judge in Charlotte has ordered to die in more than two decades.
Alejandro Umana, his legs shackled and wrists cuffed, smiled as he entered the courtroom and walked to the defense table. Then, turning to the audience, he said: "Hola."

adios!
Oh, Heaven help us! I hope nobody asked his immigration status. s/off
Seriously, I’m sick of the churches and the liberals requiring that we feel sorry for these bums. Just sick of it.
I’m expecting a joint news conference with Barack Obama, Eric Holder and Janet Napolitano praising the court for their swift and accurate justice.
Oh, I forgot, they support MS-13 and other illegal alient gangbangers, including Muslim terrorists.

"It is worth noting that following the end of the 12-year Salvadoran civil war, the insurgent FMLN a Cuban-orchestrated cohesion of five Communist groups, which was in turn supplied with arms from Cuba, China and the Soviet Union disarmed and became a political party. While the opposition Alianza Republicana Nacional (ARENA) [National Republican Alliance] party has held the presidency since 1989, there are elections scheduled for March 21. FMLN leader Shafik Handal will stand as a candidate. The 72 year-old is the former head of the Salvadoran Communist Party. He has spoken openly about turning El Salvador into a Socialist state, and recently sent Fidel Castro a letter in support of the jailing of 75 peaceful oppositionists in Cuba. His party is an essential part of the MS13 network that continues to send rifles and assorted munitions to the Salvatruchas of Los Angeles and elsewhere in the United States."
The husband of one of my church friends was deported to El Salvador a few weeks ago. Fortunately (for her and her children) this is not he.
Nonetheless, we do have a problem with MS-13 here.
This is a federal sentence? I hope he is dispatched as quickly as Timothy McVeigh. The civilized world shouldn’t have to suffer his breathing of air.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Obama and friends work to get it overturned.
Bet that some liberal Hispano-Racist group comes along and pleads for his life to be spared.
Look what GW Bush did in the Jose Medellin case....he pushed for Amnesty for Medellin after him and his gang raped and murdered two American teenage girls....and even after one of his fellow Hispanic KKK members was EXECUTED for the offense
There is too much pandering for the Hispano-Racist and Hispanic KKK crowd...against the rights of American citizens. You know if Bush went Liberal on Medellin...Obama and his minions will do the same
All MS-13 should be executed. They are criminal illegal alien scum
What, they’re outa bullets in El Salvidor? How much is it going to cost to kill this POS?
The first EVER in this nation - from what I heard on the radio report.
Mere execution makes them martyrs; therefore, they should be tortured first, on closed caption TV with live feeds to those God-foresaken, third world, banana republics that they came from.
They are viscious but unfortunately, intelligent. They are much smarter than the twin Black gangs, Crips and Bloods. Here on Long Island MS 13 is the most dangerous and successful gang. You’ll never see a mara salvatrucha playing soccer and drinking 40s at 2PM, like the Bloods do with hoops. They’re out working with landscape outfits and home improvement outfits. They get a legit stream of money and scout out possible targets for home invasions. Nassau and Suffolk PDs have had little success penetrating them. So far MS 13 has not become a problem in NYC.My guess is another smart move. They operate in places with overmatched PDs and stay away from large urban depts with a proven track record of success against gangs like the NYPD.
We are up that stinky creek w/o a paddle.
