Not sure of the cost vs benefit on that one. Dropping three letters doesn't make up for much space, and the sentence sounds clumsy (to me) that way.

But the woman has an amazing ear for the language and a talent for the coining and turning of a phrase, so I defer to her *usually* good judgment.

I just love the way our language is so subjective. To you, the lack of THE is clumsy. I love the way it sounds.

That's why I love literature and especially the different reactions to a book or something as simple as a title. Hate it, love it, but we are never indifferent.

It has to do with the graphics, the font, and the space allowed. And it’s not 3 letters, it is 5 letters because you have to count the spaces. The “the” probably would require a change of font to fit on the page and would throw the graphic compostition off. In any case, it does not sound “wrong” to anyone accustomed to news and headline style. The is frequently dropped in cases like this.
