Novelist Anne Rice says she's leaving Christianity (Uncoverts after converting)

NEW YORK – Anne Rice has had a religious conversion: She's no longer a Christian.

"In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control," the author wrote Wednesday on her Facebook page. "In the name of ... Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen."

Rice, 68, is best known for "Interview With a Vampire" and other gothic novels. Raised as a Catholic, she had rejected the church early in her life but renewed her faith in recent years and in 2008 released the memoir "Called Out of Darkness: A Spiritual Confession."

In a telephone interview Thursday, Rice said she had been having doubts for the past two to three years. She was troubled by the child abuse scandals in the church, and the church's defensive reaction, and by the ex-communication of Sister Margaret McBride, a nun and hospital administrator who had approved an abortion for a woman whose life was in danger.

"I believed for a long time that the differences, the quarrels among Christians didn't matter a lot for the individual, that you live your life and stay out of it. But then I began to realize that it wasn't an easy thing to do," said Rice, speaking from her home near Palm Springs, Calif. "I came to the conclusion that if I didn't make this declaration, I was going to lose my mind."

Rice said she is a Democrat who supports the health care legislation signed into law by President Barack Obama and believes gay marriage inevitably will be permitted throughout the country. Although no longer part of any denomination, she remains a believer and continues to read theology and post Biblical passages on her Facebook page.

“Although no longer part of any denomination, she remains a believer “

So...she renounced Christianity but remains a believer? Sounds like she has one foot on earth and one in hell. Can’t have it both ways sister!

RE: It’s kind of a relief that she’s not claiming to be a Christian anymore.

I kinda, in an odd way, respect Anne Rice for what she did. At least she refuses to pretend to be something she isn’t.

There are too many people who INSIST on being a Christian, insist on being a member of a church, and then publicly attack what the church teaches. What the heck are they members of the church for ?

If you no longer believe in Church discipline and Church doctrine or its creeds, LEAVE THE CHURCH and STOP PRETENDING that you’re a believer.

Yes, I’m talking about those politicians who claim to be Christian/Catholic and then openly support abortion, partial birth abortion, gay marriage and the like.

Actually, her first couple of vampire books were pretty good, though not recommended for children. Then they started to go downhill, as she no longer seemed able to convey as an author that evil is, well, evil. Which I thought was the point of the earlier books.

Although I am a Catholic, I found no interest in her books about Jesus, written after conversion. I was pleased for her, but thought the books were feeble. They didn’t sell as well as the early vampire books, either.

Well, I’m sorry to hear that she has relapsed once more. Prayers for her.

If her problem with the church is theocratic rules then why am I being required to tythe Obamacare, a program that President Obama sold on the religious message of being “my brother’s keeper”?

Even though it sounds like she never came to know Yeshua in the first place, it is still an awful sight to see a person turn their back on their Salvation (and all the more so for the silly reasons she gave).

Maybe it’s like professional wrestling, and she “became a Christian” to generate more publicity and book sales, and then “changed teams” again to appeal to her old fan base.

...I came to the conclusion that if I didn't make this declaration, I was going to lose my mind...

Four personal pronouns in one sentence.

It all fits.

Losing your mind, is better than losing your soul.

I hope Ms. Rice finds what she is searching for. Christianity is not "anti-gay" or "anti-feminist." Christianity offers gays the love and self-worth they are desperately seaching for in their lifestyle. Christianity is the originator of respect and value for women. Women were property until Christianity came along.

Now, as far as artificial birth control, pick a sect other than Catholicism.

Yeah, converted or uncoverted Rice. So what else is new. She is free to convert/uncovert to anything and everything she wants. Its beyond me why she thinks I or anyone else really cares? I hope that whatever she newly converts to will bring her spiritual happiness. Methinks though, that she puts way too much emphasis on what others think about her than what she thinks/feels about scripture and the word. Given that, I fear she will soon be disillusioned by her next “firm belief”. I guess she missed the part about being known as a Christian through her deeds. I am real sorry she can’t square homosexual activities with Biblical writings. She seems a little pissed at the text. I am unaware of any major religion that embraces homosexuality. She could certainly immerse herself into the Roman/Greek pantheon and find one I’m sure. Might be diffficult for her to find a temple though.

I've noticed that people who are Democrats are not true Christians. At least Anne Rice admitted publicly she has chosen the Democrat principles over those of Our Savior.

Many Democrats pretend to be Christian but they are nothing but phonies. It really is an either or choice.

So...she renounced Christianity but remains a believer?

It sounds like the news media may have (deliberately?) conflated leaving the Roman Catholic Church and renouncing Christianity. All the issues she mentions are inconsistent with that church, but many other churches, we well know, embrace those positions.

I don't find it necessary, to call myself a Christian, to be 'anti-gay', whatever that means, nor opposed to artificial methods of birth control, which means even the use of condoms to Roman Catholics. Now if she had said she refused to be anti-abortion in the name of Christ, I would wonder what in the name of Christ she is doing trying to be a Christian of any stripe.
