Did you use “persecute” vs. “prosecute” purposely? You know how well the judicial system in the south worked for blacks thru the mid-60s and beyond. We are still paying for it every day in a variety of ways.
If the FBI will handle this case seriously, and maybe keep Jesse and Al and the other race hustlers from capitalizing on it, it would be important to the family who lost one of their own. LEO always has ‘cold cases’ to solve. This is no different, except Sherrod got so much press, it brought her father’s case to their attention.
If it were my family or yours, we’d want it solved and put to rest once and for all. If it stirs up more racial strife, as if there isn’t enough already, I wouldn’t care if it were my family. Nor would you.

I lived in the South in the 50’s and 60’s and base my knowledge on real life, not on movies and TV shows in which every Black is innocent and every White (except the Northern Heroes) is a racist redneck.
My Father served on juries, one in which they found a Black innocent of a minor charge, tho he technically was guilty. They just didn’t think he was doing anything unreasonable.
