Democrats hope Obama 49th birthday events spark funds, turnout for candidates

Democrats in Austin are throwing a Hawaiian-style luau Wednesday, complete with "tropical fruit, deserts and side dishes."

There's a "presidential potluck" in Phoenix and a "49 Candles for America" party in Des Moines. And the official Organizing for America iPad app is calling on all Americans to pull out their old 2008 campaign paraphernalia -- "YES WE CAN! YES WE WILL!" the app says -- and wear it proudly Wednesday.

The reason: President Obama turns 49.

In need of an enthusiasm transfusion, the president's political operation is celebrating a year early, betting that the millions of Obama activists who helped him become president won't care that the traditional 50th birthday bash isn't until next year. They're hoping that a frenzy of birthday wishes for the commander-in-chief (Can you believe he's 49? Let's celebrate!) will translate into millions of dollars and thousands of phone calls on behalf of Democratic candidates who face the voters this fall.

Those activists are being deluged with e-mails this week, including one from Michelle Obama, with the subject line: "Will you sign Barack's birthday card with me?"

"Every year, our family tries to come up with a fun way to wish Barack a happy birthday," the first lady writes. "Together with other Organizing for America supporters -- and me, Malia, Sasha, and Bo -- we'll wish him a happy birthday and let him know that we're ready to take on the year ahead alongside him."

I thought they didn’t celebrate birthdays...in the Muslim tradition.

May the fleas of a thousand camels and goats inhabit his armpits for his birthday.

Ain't gonna work. That ship done sailed.

By the way, anyone recall the media making a big deal out of any of President Bush's birthdays?

The mere fact that this rank amateur is Cinc is motivation enough for me...

...my wishes for Obama will be answered...

He should visit Lenin’s tomb for his birthday - you know, for some inspiration.

The trouble in buying enthusiasm is, sooner or later you run out of other people’s money.

"tropical fruit, deserts, and side dishes"?

Reminds me of what was said of the Romans: "they make a desert and call it peace."

This makes me laugh. Now really, who gives a damn about Obozo’s birthday?

Going to have to bus in some union members for the muslim’s birthday party. Won’t look good in the news with zero people so they need to get a crowd from somewhere! They’re good at that stuff.

There's a "presidential potluck" in Phoenix...

There's also a "presidential potluck" at my house every morning at about 5:30.

I just think it’s a little creepy for a nation’s citizens to have actual BIRTHDAY PARTIES for the head of state. I expect that in Kim Jong-Il’s neck of the woods, not here.

Best birthday in years for Barry without "Aunt Ester" chewing on his ass for one thing or another.

I pity the poor man for having to live with an Angry Black Woman every day.

Just remember the TP.

A "49 Candles for America" party in Des Moines.

I thought America has many more candles on its birthday cake.
